In my university, this book is used for the Elementary Hindi course. I would not recommend this book to be used in any other setting than in a classroom. It contains many errors, even though this is the umpteenth edition. Only a proficient Hindi speaker could point these errors out to those who use the book.
Also, by the time I got to the eighth chapter (out of eighteen), the book started to fall apart. Pages started to fall out - I had expected a better quality for this price. It's not just my edition, the same has happened to five other people I know who also bought this book.

We are using this textbook in my Hindi course at SOAS university and I can say that this is one of the best textbooks in English to introduce the Hindi language though an interesting and engaging story and accompanying exercises.
The textbook uses the Devanagari script from the start, with romanisation for the first few chapters as with most Teach Yourself courses.

One thing to note is that this book is virtually identical to the 2003 edition entitled "Teach Yourself Hindi New Edition (Teach Yourself Complete Courses)" and very similar to the other editions dating back to the 80s, so you may be able to save a few pounds by buying the 2003 edition instead as there are no differences save for formatting and page numbers.

Also, if you are just starting out to the language, I heavily recommend a website mentioned in the "Taking it further" appendix at the back of the book which is the "hindi urdu flagship", named after an institute of the same name in America. The website (as well as the institute) is also by the book's author, Rupert Snell, and so includes many resources that can be used independently or to compliment the book.

Overall, money well spent on the pursuit of Hindi.

Quite heavy going and will require time for study. The emphasis is on grammar rather than quick communication. Maybe good for those who already have some grasp of basic phrases etc. It is useable as an introduction though.

I had to buy this for my Hindi class in college, but it's a wonderful book on its own. The "dialogues" in Hindi are always amusing and the grammar/vocab/alphabet concepts are made very approachable.
