A good book that introduces a range of Chinese calligraphic scripts. It sort of builds on his other book on standard script (the hardback full colour one, not the thin paperback though that is worth getting as well) which additional information and subject matter. However, I would recommend getting that book first before getting this one as I firmly believe one should have some sort of grounding in standard script before attempting others, otherwise, the very quick and successive introduction of five different ones might throw and confuse you.

Nevertheless, like his other books it is well produce (though there are some mislabeling of scripts used for a said project here and there; you would be able to spot them eventually) with full colour images and good instructions. Of course, some projects, like the bangshu giant calligraphy, you won't be able to attempt without some effort in sourcing a giant brush etc but the ones you can do are fun and appropriate. You should note that he misses out the usual chapter on backing xuan paper which you should get from his other books.

All in all, a good supplementary book for a beginning calligrapher.

HASH(0x8c0c7af8) out of 5 stars Pretty Pictures 30 Sept. 2008

This book had a lot of pretty pictures. But don't buy it if you actually want an in-depth instructional book on Chinese calligraphy. About 2/3 of the book is just about making crafts.
HASH(0x8c6961ec) out of 5 stars Even includes Magic Paper. 24 Jan. 2015

Nice selection of calligraphy examples and fun projects to work on. There are some nice proverbs and poetry you can practice. It even has magic paper in the back, so you can practice calligraphy over and over again with clear water and a brush.

HASH(0x8c696258) out of 5 stars Chinese calligraphy overview 27 Dec. 2007

This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn about the different styles of Chinese calligraphy. It gives enough information along with a list of brushes needed for each style so that I could actually practice some simple symbols. I don't believe I will ever try the giant writing style as it requires a horses tail (the whole thing!) and all the horses I know would look very sad without their's. I'm hoping to get some poster size panels done for the New Year's celebrations. I also know where to find the resources for all the symbols relating to the style I've chosen. Thanks for the guide to Chinese calligraphy.

The only way this book could be better would be if it had an instructional dvd included. The descriptions and photos are good enough to follow though so its not really a necessity. I found the book to be informative and the instruction easy to follow. Now its just a matter of trying it out and practicing...
HASH(0x8c692594) out of 5 stars Good introduction to all the main scripts 31 Oct. 2015

Good introduction to all the main scripts. Good ideas for projects. Not a in-depth detailed guide but, all the basics are there.
