About the Author
Though he loved to draw as a child, Larson didn’t formally study art, nor did he consider being a cartoonist. He graduated in 1972 from Washington State University with a degree in communications but took many classes in the sciences. In 1990, Larson received the Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus Award and was the centennial commencement speaker. His talk was titled “The Importance of Being Weird.” His interest in science was a frequent topic in many of The Far Side® cartoons, which he created for fifteen years, from January 1, 1980, to January 1, 1995.
Larson’s work on The Far Side® has earned him numerous awards, including the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year from the National Cartoonists Society in 1990 and 1994. The National Cartoonists Society also named Larson Best Syndicated Panel Cartoonist in both 1985 and 1988. In 1993, The Far Side® was awarded the Max and Moritz Award for Best International Comic Strip/Panel by the International Comic Salon.
In 1994, Larson debuted a twenty-two-minute version of his first animated film, Gary Larson’s Tales From The Far Side®, as a Halloween special on CBS television, and it quickly became a cult favorite. The film won the Grand Prix at the 1995 Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France. That film and its sequel, Gary Larson’s Tales From The Far Side® II, were selected for numerous international film festivals, including Venice, Brussels, and Telluride, and were broadcast in various foreign countries. Both were produced with traditional cel animation, completely hand-inked and painted.
Music has also been an important part of Larson’s life. He started playing the guitar at an early age, moved to the banjo for a few years, and then ultimately returned to the guitar. Since retiring from daily newspaper syndication, Larson has focused his creative efforts on the guitar and his passion for jazz.
At the end of its run, The Far Side® appeared in nearly two thousand newspapers. It in turn spawned twenty-three The Far Side® books, including sixteen collections, five anthologies, and two retrospectives, twenty-two of which appeared on the New York Times Best Sellers list. Over the years, more than forty-one million books and seventy-nine million calendars have been sold, and The Far Side® has been translated into more than seventeen languages.
As for his inspiration, Larson often cites his family’s “morbid sense of humor” growing up and how his older brother loved to scare him whenever he got the chance. He was also once quoted as saying, “You know those little snow globes that you shake up? I always thought my brain was sort of like that. You know, where you just give it a shake and watch what comes out and shake it again.” He attributes much of his success to the caffeine in the coffee he drinks daily.

About the author

Gary Larson was born August 14, 1950, in Tacoma, Washington. Always drawn to nature, he and his older brother spent much of their youth exploring the woods and swamps of the Pacific Northwest, and the tidelands and waters of Puget Sound.
In 1985, the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco premiered a collection of four hundred of Larson’s originals in The Far Side of Science exhibit, which later traveled to science venues across North America, including the Smithsonian Institution and the American Museum of Natural History. In 1988, Harvard professor Stephen Jay Gould, a prominent science writer and a member of the museum’s Division of Invertebrate Zoology, dubbed Larson “the national humorist of natural history” in his foreword to The Far Side Gallery 3.
In another fitting tribute, the scientific community named a chewing louse after Larson (Strigiphilus garylarsoni), and paleontologists refer to the distinctive array of previously unnamed tail spikes on a stegosaurus as the “thagomizer,” thanks to one of his cartoons.
Larson currently lives in the coffee capital of the United States—Seattle, Washington—with his wife, Toni.

I won't critique the quality of the individual cartoons contained in this book as anyone looking to purchase it will have an idea of the genius that is Gary Larson.
Despite their age, the humour in the single panel comic strips still holds up well today and this collection is great for dipping in and out of when you need to have a break from the mundane and take a trip to the far-side.
The books are very comprehensive containing all the cartoons published under the far side name and is printed on high quality stock.
The cartoons are well presented and coloured sensitively or left in their original monochrome.
If you can get it at the right price, then this 2-book edition is a nice object to own.
I have a few issues with the books that should reduce my rating slightly, but won't because the collection is so comprehensive.
Each of the 2 hardback books are heavy. Carrying round both books in the solid slip-case make things worse. For those of you with a bad back, the 3 book paperback version should be a little more user friendly.
Although billed as "the complete", it is missing a few things such as
- The "Weiner dog art" insert from the small book/collection with the same name.
- The "curse of Madame C" strip from the small book with the same name.
- The Lightbulb/music stand gag (dedication to the authors father) from "last chapter and worse"
- The dedication to the artists brother from "The Far Side Gallery 5"
- Images of the covers and unique artwork from the original paperback books (such as the cover from "Night of the crash test dummies" or the "Portrait" artwork from the "far-side gallery 3"
I also noticed that one or two captions have been changed. For example, the "Orangutan in the guitar shop" cartoon in this collection is different to the one used in the UK edition of "last chapter and worse".
None of these issues are the end of the world as the missing content is easily available in the original paperback collections. These books can be easily and inexpensively obtained on the second hand market.
It would also have been nice to include some non-syndicated but very far-side content such as
- The time magazine cover
- The complete "Natures Way" comics (the pre-cursor to the far-side)
- The "doggin around" LP cover
So overall this is a very nice object to own with a comprehensive set of great content and despite some minor complaints about what could have been included I would thoroughly recommend.
One word of caution is that the 3 book paperback re-issue is more user friendly and will fit most peoples budgets now that the hard back version is out of print and getting expensive.
This is a monster of a book. Its huge. And its very likely to eat up many hours of the day after you purchase it. While not fitting the normal format of a "page turner" this is exactly what it is - you can't help but just turn over and check out another page: you may come upon a classic "The Holsteins Visit the Grand Canyon" or "The Real Reason Dinosaurs Died Out" - you may come upon gems you have never seem before (so I can't describe them to you!). But what you will do is be amazed at the strange and wonderful world that Gary Larson created.
Yes the book is heavy, no I don't think you will be able to read it in bed, yes the pictures could have been larger - but that would have only compounded the first two issues, and yes the price is attached to the box - but when you see the look at the cows faces, or you encounter a crocodile being pushed out of a maternity ward with a broom, do you really care about such things.
This is a wonderful collection of warped and splendid humour - and at the time of writing its half price! Do yourself a favour - buy it.
As you may have guessed - it comes highly recommended.
Yeah, I know. Don't understand that either.
To my way of thinking he is the greatest cartoonist that ever walked the earth. Unlikely ever to be another to rival him.
I discovered his work 30 years ago, and those same drawings still make me laugh out loud. What really amazes me is that there are hundreds of them, and only a very few of them that I do not "get". How does he do that? What I do know is that I take great comfort in the fact that this guy, who has the Same sense of humour I do, is worshiped the world over.
I love that the collection is so totally complete, love that it is substantial, so beautifully bound and published.
I dislike that it is impractical to read in bed, but with cooperation my wife and I do manage to do so.
So, what are you waiting for, you're reading this, so you know Gary Larson. Just buy the thing already!
(I did, and I'm still OK. Really, I am).
