All three albums by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, plus three unreleased duets - two alternative takes and one completely new track, and some Tammi solo tracks to flesh out Disc 2, some seeing their first release on this collection but now more comprehensively documented on "Come On And See Me", the complete Tammi solo recordings makes this an attractive prospect for Motown collectors. The first album "United" is as strong as any in the 1960's Motown catalogue, kicking off with the seminal "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" with the lesser known tracks standing head and shoulders with that superb single, and "Two Can Have A Party" actually exceeding this. This really was a partnership made in heaven, the counterpoint of their voices intertwining to very satisfying effect. It's clear they had a wonderful working relationship with the ease in each other's company oozing out of the speakers. Disc 1 is completed by follow up album "You're All I Need" with highlights including "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" and a great rendition of "You're All I Need To Get By". This disc is completed with the three previously unreleased tracks which commence with a very different take of "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing".
Controversy surrounds the final album "Easy" with differing perspectives based on who you believe. By this time Tammi was in the middle of a series of operations for the brain cancer that eventually took her all too short life. Marvin recalls that he was asked to sing the tracks with producer Valerie Simpson subbing for Tammi on the pretext that the money generated from sales would go towards paying for Tammi's treatment. Simpson remembers it differently, stating that whilst she sang guide vocals as placeholders Tammi later came in and sang her parts piecemeal from a wheelchair when she felt able to. Certainly two tracks are undoubtedly Tammi - "I Can't Believe You Love Me" and "More, More, More", both included in their solo versions to complete CD2, but it's clear the remaining vocal performances don't match the heights of the first two albums and indeed do sound different. That could simply be Simpson's guide vocal remaining on the track, or Tammi's seated singing position at a time where the treatment likely left her exhausted. This is a lesser work but why that is so and who actually sung what is still a huge matter of conjecture 50 years down the line. The album does contain the wonderful "The Onion Song" and "I'm Your Puppet", but it's CD1 which I play mostly, reflecting the quality step-down of "Easy", as ironic a title as could be imagined for an album that was anything but. The solo material is all interesting and at the time of release nine new Tammi solo tracks would have been reason enough for Motown collectors to purchase. A fine collection for completists.

Rather than a 'best of' compilation album, this 2 disc CD set covers all three albums that Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell made together in the 1960's, and also comes with a handful of bonus tracks, demos and solo versions of the songs by Tammi Terrell.
The first album, and possibly their most famous, is 'United - Marvin and Tammi'. It includes the hits 'Two Can Have A Party', 'Your Precious Love', 'If I Could Build My World Around You' and the song that came to be their signature tune ''Ain't No Mountain High Enough''. The sound is pure, 60's pop/soul perfection in the best Motown style. A little more soulful than say, the Supremes, and yet still light and frothy this is their best pairing album.
The second album has some of their best known songs, like ''Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing' and 'You're All I Need To Get By', and ''Come on And See Me'. Whilst not as memorable as their debut album, the songs are still strong and their voices blend perfectly. Tammi especially sounds good on this album.
The third album, 'Easy' is the weakest of the three, but still has a few great songs like 'The Onion Song', 'California Soul' and 'Good Lovin Ain't Easy To Come By'. It also has a few great cover versions of now-classics like 'I'm Your Puppet' and 'Baby I Need Your Loving'. The controversy that came with this album still divides fans though, as it's rumoured that due to Tammi's failing health, Valerie Simpson was called in to imitate Tammi on the record. Whether it's Tammi or not, the songs are still good here, but the sparkle of the first two albums isn't as bright.
Even though they never recorded together again (Tammi died in 1970 of a brain tumour), they undoubtably were Motown's greatest duet pair and made some of the most beautiful, classic pop love duets in music history. Definately a great set, and I'd highly recommend it for any music fan.

Back in the 60's and 70's, Marvin and Tami were the greatest duet act. Musically, they were a perfect match to the Ashford/Simpson songs written by another perfect match. The result is musical magic or perhaps 'love' set to music. This extraordinary duet ended with Tami's untimely death. Such a musical pairing has not been matched since. The remastering of the original recordings is pretty good too.

I purchased this mainly on the reviews. I've been a fan of Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell for more than 2 decades and I have the well-known tracks on various compilation discs. Being a fan and a completist I had to buy this album, not knowing entirely what I was in for.
I'm happy to say this album surpasses all my expectations, not just in terms of tracks but also in terms of audio quality. There are some really excellent tracks on this album, not just the well known hits like The Onion Song. Even though I like Ain't no Mountain high enough I feel that actually this is a one of the weaker tracks, The song that follows this on this collection, You got what it takes, is a real gem that I had not heard before.
This collection has been put together with love and affection for the original tracks and the artists. It'll break your heart and touch your soul in equal measures, both the slower tracks and the uptempo numbers are great. This truly is a gem of a collection.

Motowns finest duet, its as if they were destined to sing together. When they sing its so easy to believe they were a couple, as they harmonised and jell so well in such a soulful manner it makes you sit back and forget the rest of the world exists
