Sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news, but for those who order this box set, I urge you all to check through the discs very carefully on arrival. A fair number of discs show what appear to be residual glue marks from what I assume to be from the glue that's used to construct the replica cardboard sleeves that house the discs.
I notice that on the American Amazon.com a reference to this particular problem is made on the Miles Davis Community board.
As a consquence, I've arranged to return the set back to Amazon for a refund.
What should of been the reissue of the year has been spoiled by the poor construction of the replica sleeves packaging. I'm terribly disappointed.
ADDITIONAL FOOTNOTE @ AT DECEMBER 3RD, 2009
I see on the American Amazon.com a note added by Amazon and I quote:
"Please Note: We have been notified that there is a manufacturer defect with this product. We are working with the manufacturer to get this corrected and have the product available again. We will be notifying customers who have already ordered the product to alert them to the issue and offer a resolution."
Not sure if this applies to those orders made at Amazon.co.uk but I'm glad that the issues raised by concerned buyers is being attended to.
ADDITIONAL FOOTNOTE @ AT JANUARY 9TH, 2010
In the light of comments on Amazon.com with regard to a re-issuing of this set, I took the plunge with fingers crossed and re-purchased this set.
I'm very pleased to report that the issues related to the glue seemed to have been resolved. I checked every single disc and there was not a mark on them. The sleeves were all intact too. The box itself has undergone a minor re-design so as opposed to the sloping hinged lid of the original design, it now has a shoebox type lid. If that's any better, I can't really say, but it does help distingish between the fault ridden early release and the new re-vamped edition. As others have commented, the reproductions of the LP sleeves could have been better but at least they're not falling apart so perhaps one shouldn't really quibble too much.
I now have no hesitation in recommending this set to anyone remotely interested in the music of Miles Davis either a beginner just starting a collection or an old timer consolidating their collection.
At less than £ for 70 CDs and a DVD, it's an absolute bargain!
I want the record company to fix the problems and re-issue it. I WANT to buy it and listen to it. I don't care whether it contains the 'full' or 'complete' sets of Miles recordings-- I have some allegiance to the original releases because this is what people heard at the time, and what influenced them at the time.
In his autobiography, Miles predicted that Columbia would make a heap of money after he died by issuing unreleased material. I assume he knows what's going on with this shoddy packaging of RELEASED material, and is currently issuing death stares during set breaks at that Great Gig In The Sky...
all the best, vincent
- All the disks in "gatefold" sleeves, i.e. the doubles and a few others where the disk goes in from the centre, look absolutely fine to me.
- ALL EXCEPT ONE of the disks in single sleeves, where the disk goes in from the outside have some kind of residue mark. The only one of these single sleeve disks that looks OK is "Miles in Berlin". Many of these sleeves are very poorly constructed anyway and one or two are coming apart, so it seems that most of the adhesive used has ended up on the disks!
I'm very disappointed and very annoyed in equal measures. I'm not even going to try to play any of them and my set is going straight back as well.
I just hope that Amazon give Sony Music a real roasting over this apparent total lack of any kind of quality control - either during or after production.
** An update 01/12/09 **
Well a week's gone by since I reviewed this very shoddily produced set. I still haven't seen a single word of apology or anything else directly from Sony/Columbia. However, I have just noticed this on the sale page of the US Amazon.com site:
We have been notified that there is a manufacturer defect with this product. We are working with the manufacturer to get this corrected and have the product available again. We will be notifying customers who have already ordered the product to alert them to the issue and offer a resolution."
I would really like to have this set and on the music alone this would have got five stars from me rather than one, but at the moment I can't see any point in ordering a replacement. So I'd like to know what Amazon.co.uk 's attitude to this is. Please tell us! I realise it is not Amazon's fault but surely they do have a very significant interest in sorting it out - I understand it was sold exclusively through Amazon in the USA. On the basis of comments from purchasers they must have had a lot of returns.
