Disc 1 is the real standout in this set. Comprised of Kathy's first Decca album (from 1963) and four tracks from her 1965 follow-up, it's an excellent marriage of first-class singing and good songs. The ballads are particular winners. Pieces like Someone to Watch Over Me, I'll Get By and If You Were the Only Boy in the World provide an excellent showcase for Kathy's strong, clear and warm vocals. My goodness, she could certainly sing!
Disc 2 is more mixed. Just over half of the tracks are from singles and they tend to be a tad formulaic. Still, Secret Love does sound good and the vocal version of Dance On is attractive. The remaining tracks revert to album material and the quality promptly picks-up again.
Listening to the set does pose a question. With her looks and voice, why did Kathy not become the major British female survivor of the 60s? Beats me.

Kathy Kirby was a regular performer on British television during the sixties (and to a lesser extent subsequently) but her achievements on record were modest, with just five hit singles. It seems that Kathy was more interested in her television career than her records, which is fair enough. Fortunately, she recorded singles and albums over many years (up to the early seventies), thus ensuring her legacy is preserved for future generations. This compilation focuses on the early part of her career from 1962 to 1965, after which Kathy recorded for Columbia. Here, you can find all the hits early singles and most of their B sides, together with all the tracks from Kathy's two Decca albums.

Kathy's powerful voice is not to everybody's liking, especially on the up-tempo songs, but I enjoy her music. Kathy's biggest hit was Secret love, with which she had her only UK top five hit. Kathy's up-tempo re-interpretation is more dramatic than Doris Day's original. I prefer the original but Kathy demonstrated that there is more than one way to sing this song. There is a line in the song about shouting from the highest heights and it seems that this inspired Kathy's interpretation of the song, which some people may find overpowering. I've heard many versions of this song by pop, jazz and country singers, but while many are based on the original arrangement, I've never come across another like Kathy's version.

Kathy's other UK hits were Dance on (which just missed the top ten), Let me go lover (which just made the top ten), You're the one (a top twenty hit) and I belong (only a minor hit despite being the British entry and runner-up in the 1965 Eurovision song contest). Like Secret love, all these hits were up-tempo.

I must admit that im a late starter when it comes to discovering and apreciating Kathy Kirby. I actually bought this collection for a friend and had a sly listen to it and was immediately hooked, this woman has an amazing voice, and most of the recordings stand the test of time, some sound a bit dated but, this just adds to the charm. This is a singer and collection Id reccomend anyone to buy, well worth the money and a joy to listen to !

Recently we've had several cd's of Kathy's old material (about time too!) so this 2cd set is more than welcome.
Thirty eight tracks featuring Kathy's Eurovision entry "I Belong" plus a wonderful vocal version of The Shadows "Dance On", Kathy's 45's "You're The One", "Secret Love", "Let Me Go Lover" and many more album tracks like "Acapulco 1922" etc:
Some songs sounds slighty dated now but that's neither here nor there.
Kathy Kirby was a wonderful star, I saw her in the 60's In Concert with Tom Jones, we miss you Kathy - it's sad to think you won't perform onstage again, I wonder why you made that choice?

With her platinum blonde hair flicked up at the ends, glossy lipstick, sparkling eyes & figure-hugging, oft sequined, dresses, she was one of the most glamourous of the 60s song-birds. If she looked stunning & beautiful, then she had a voice to match: clear as a bell, powerful when it needed to be & gentle when that was what a song called for. When she sang of failed love, you felt her anguish. When she sang an up-beat, positive song, she put a smile on your face. The first single I bought to play on my red Dansette record player, was Kathy's 'Secret Love'. This CD set includes this ever-green, of course, along with other hits, such as my very favourite, 'You're The One', with its dramatic, Spanish-sounding swirling strings, & those incredibly long notes she holds. There are no dud tracks here. There couldn't be: as long as Kathy wraps her magnificent voice around them, there are only gold nuggets to be found. She suffered much personal trauma, & it is so sad that she could not sustain her popularity into the 70s. But through tracks like these, she will never be forgotten.

The recent death (in 2011) of Kathy Kirby brought back to my mind what a great singer she was. I remember first seeing her perform on TV's historic "Wheeltappers & Shunters" pub nights many many years ago and thought to myself, this girl is much too good for this place. And I was so right! She could, and would have been a major international star, as big as any others of the day, but sadly failed to get the prominence she well deserved mainly because of her somewhat anxious partner and a falling out with BBC TV. It's a very sad story! In consequence, Kathy Kirby did not produce as many hit records as she would otherwise have done but it's great to find that all of those she made are included together in this 2 disc CD set. Unfortunately, all the hits are in mono because stereo sound was not yet fully established. But the quality and range are excellent for the day, and certainly much better than the Decca 7 inch singles of these songs which always sounded somewhat ragged and distorted. Just a couple of her lesser known songs in this collection are in stereo and are a joy to hear. Most of her "Wheeltappers" songs are also included here, although again in mono as they were made for TV, which had no stereo in those days. It's an excellent set of music and a reminder of how very good this artist was with a distinctive and powerful voice few others can match. It's a real tragedy that she was held back from going on to greater things. Highly recommended.
