The price of this collection seems to fluctuate quite a bit; when at the lower end of its range this is a particularly great deal!
The quality is lovely even though it is paperback. The jokes are as current as ever and it makes one wistful for one's childhood.
Bill Watterson is a genius. If you don't know these books you should buy it and if you have the books already it is a lovely collector's edition set to have around the house.
If you love Calvin and Hobbes, you must get a hold of this collection.
If you have never read Calvin and Hobbes, BUY IT!! you will be converted.
BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT.
As others have said this is not light reading, it weighs a tonne. So be aware that your box set might come with a little bash in the corner, but your buying it for the exquisite contents not the container.
... and as Calvin finally says "lets go exploring".
The strips are laid out in chronological order of when they where published and even the Sunday strips which where never published in the old "square" books in colour are now endowed with extra depth in full colour.
There's quite an in depth introduction by Bill about how he started and why he eventually made the decision to stop producing any more of the comic strip.
An essential addition to and Calvin & Hobbes fan bookshelf.
Good luck with whatever you're doing Mr Watterson, feel free to return to comic-writing one day!
As others have mentioned, it is really heavy and the packaging was inappropriate and I was scared when I saw the state of it that the box with the books had been damaged. Fortunately, the was nothing wrong with it, but could have been, so check yours carefully when you receive it.
Probably not a good choice for kids, for them I'd get the 4-pack with the flexible covers.
When it arrived, the first thing I noticed was the weight: three bulky tomes! Although I was slightly disappointed that they aren't really suitable for taking with me (too big, too heavy and too high-quality to risk damaging), the quality of the books is superb.
A must for all fans, but definitely more suitable for being read on a table or desk than anything else.
