This album is brilliant. The music is mostly uplifting, electro dance but with dark, sometimes monotonous vocals which really add some atmosphere to the songs.
I'm a fan of other artists such as VNV Nation and Cruxshadows but in my opinion Assemblage 23 stand out as the vocals are better.

Every track is good, and some of the stand out tracks such as 'Spark' are truly brilliant.
I can hear influences from many other artists in this music, even going as far as Skinny Puppy...(listen to the last word of every other verse in 'how can you sleep')

But never does it feel like anything has been copied. It feels fresh and original, but sticks to formulas that work so well. A good recipe.

The bonus/remix tracks (5 of them) are all excellent too so it's worth buying the special edition if you can grab it for a similar price.

I have over 300gb of music spanning every genre you could imagine but this album is up there with my favorites.

Fantastic album, dark lyrics combined with great tunes, definitely worth a listen by fans of electronic music and the latest album Bruise is even better!

Am a fan of assemblage 23 anyway but this is probably one of the best albums Tom Shear has done. Collapse and Spark are outstanding. Love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album - Very possibly the best A23 yet! 13 Nov. 2009
By BorkBorkBork - Published on Amazon.com

I have enjoyed every Assemblage 23 album, but I have not enjoyed them equally. While I found Storm and Meta to both be very good albums, I found that when I wanted to listen to A23, I usually reached for Defiance, and to a lesser degree Failure and Contempt, first. I expected my reaction would be much the same with this album.

I was pleasantly surprised, however. While it is undeniably the Assemblage 23 I know and love, I feel like there's some real growth here. Tom extends his vocal range here quite a bit, which differentiates the songs nicely. The lyrics combine the introspection of most of his previous work, but with a few more songs pointed at the external world (in the vein of Madman's Dream on Meta).

The music also sounds different, but I can't really put my finger on how, exactly. All the pieces of each song seem to fit together more cleanly, and convey a bit more feeling than previous efforts. And while the overall sound seems a little brighter, it never crosses the line into poppy, and doesn't clash with or overpower the lyrics. In general, the whole effort just feels more mature and well crafted than previous albums.

My biggest complaint with electronic music as a whole is that it can at times tend to feel flat and lifeless. A23 as a whole, and most specifically with Compass, completely overcomes these problems, injecting some real feeling into the proceedings.

All in all, I suppose the biggest indication of success in an album is how much one listens to it, and I have been unable to stop myself from listening to this album repeatedly, which is pretty much the highest praise I can give. I honestly think it has displaced Defiance as my favorite. Definitely highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A spark among the embers indeed 14 Nov. 2009
By CoryRay - Published on Amazon.com

Like most other reviewers here, I LOVE this album. I would definitely say it's the new best A23 album - and without a doubt one of the best EBM/futurepop/whatever albums ever made. I feel that Tom has taken everything he does best and constructed a nearly flawless album. There isn't a single track I don't love. My only *complaint* is that the bonus track "Grind" wasn't included as part of the official album, as it is an EXCELLENT track. My absolute favorite tracks, though, would have to be "Collapse," "Impermanence," and "Spark." One of the things I love about A23 is the amazing, meaningful songwriting that - unlike some of his peers (*ahem* VNV Nation) - never sounds cheesy or melodramatic. But A23's greatest asset is probably the fact that he always continues to grow musically and never sounds like anyone else, whereas some of the others seem to have either completely run out of new ideas (VNV) or completely changed their sound with horrid results (Apoptygma Berzerk). A23 currently sits WAY at the top of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Shear inspires, as always 19 Mar. 2010
By Gaheris - Published on Amazon.com

Some casual listeners of EBM associate traditional EBM lyrics with depression and tragedy, all the while set to a pulsing base beat. Interestingly enough, with 'Compass,' listeners are able to get a strong sense of direction in the opposite direction: finding hope, tolerance, some modicum of calm despite the stormy seas of drama in one's life. Every time I listen to an Assemblage 23 song, I am filled with a strong sense of interior meditation, meditation that may superficially seem rather tragic and morose, but on a deeper level, a meditation that allows one to confront inner demons and conflicts with resolve and triumph.

As such, EBM bands such as Mr. Shear's Assemblage 23 are inevitably much more able to inspire a sense of living life stronger, with even more verve and resolve, and the pulsating base beat that undergirds each song also teaches us a similar lesson of strength and agency as they apply to our daily, drama-ridden lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing! 11 Nov. 2009

Another long time fan of Tom Shear, I am simply amazed how this guy can keep within his style but make it absolutely new.

Every CD he puts out gets better and better. As usual Tom Shear is a master lyricist and creates interesting and inspiring songs. The EBM dancefloor beats are catchy, powerful and driving. They for the most part start off dark or simple and end up revving up into a euphoria of melody.

What makes this CD different is I catch hints of the newer dance/trance samples and bits spliced in to his songs.

If you are new to EBM A23 is definitely a good gateway.

If you are a EMB Vet. why are you wasting time reading this review, hurry and get this gem!

I previewed most of their albums and decided to go with this one based on other reviews...and glad I did. I will probably purchase their latest album and work my way back through some of the older ones
