It is probably unfair to rate a prescriptive book 35 years after it was written when the results are in for the advice given. My first concern is that acceptance of the idea that 'strangers' are properly anxiety inducing. This has been the modus operandi of Fox News and the Religious Right. The expectation that the Church is an option for engaging in public space discourse might fit some idealized faith, Christianity or other, but as someone else has remarked, Sunday morning is the most segregated time of the week. Failing to address the apparent trend that Churches are losing meaning for their own members makes the rest of the prescriptions hollow and the results, now in, were scant.

This book is a bit older -- early 80s I think -- but very timely. Discusses the importance of everyday, seemingly insignificant public interactions and their role in building community. Well worth a look. Palmer is writing from a Christian perspective (see subtitle), but the book would hold interest for anyone interested in building better communities.
