For anybody with even a passing interest in the American Civil War this book is an excellent read. Written in the style and language of the day, it really puts you in the action. It most definitely isn't a historical reference book being the reminisces of Watkins as best he recalls the events he was involved in but there is plenty in there to pique the interest of the amateur historian.

It should be read along with Marcus Toneys THE PRIVATIONS OF A PRIVATE in which he relates his side of the story fighting in the same regiment and battles as Watkins.

Liked the way this is a personal memoir. It deals with little things not the big battles. That way you feel you are experiencing it first hand. I now feel I've lived the civil war through his eyes.

How rare to find a wartime history written by an enlisted man rather than a general! Sam Watkins had a rare gift, and this book is eminently readable and informative. A great read!

An absolutely amazing read. Anyone with an interest in warfare and the role played by an ordinary private in history must read this book.

An interesting read. It took some time to get into due to the authors wiring style but it was interesting enough to hold my attention
