From the Back Cover

In recent years, ethnic conflicts and ethnic cleansing are all–too familiar topics in the news  and have focused renewed academic attention on the subject of ethnic identity.  A Companion to Ethnicity in the Ancient Mediterranean presents a comprehensive collection of essays that explore questions relating to ethnicity and cultural identity in the societies of the ancient Mediterranean world. Featuring contributions from a wide range of Classical Studies scholars and specialists from around the world, chapters span the diverse civilizations ranging from ancient Egypt and Israel, through Greece and Rome, and into Late Antiquity. Essays explore modern theories of ethnic identity formation and reveal the timeless complexity of questions relating to ethnicity. A discussion of ethnicity by ancient and modern writers also offers a vector of interpretation vital to the understanding of many foundational cultures. Scholarly and thought–provoking, A Companion to Ethnicity in the Ancient Mediterranean offers extraordinary insights into the roots of ancient ethnic identity and its links to the modern world.

Having read Herodotus, much of Livy and bits of Polybius, and all of Strabo I was, like I'm sure many readers are, left wondering who are all these mysterious tribes, where did they come from, and where are they now? It's a vibrant part of ancient European history, particularly in Herodotus, and I've always wanted to know more. When Blackwell's Companion to Ethnicity in the Ancient Mediterranean came up in a search, I was excited. The price, even for a used copy, was over $100 so I put it on a list in hopes the price would drop. It never did, but eventually I bought the book.
What I hoped this book would contain was a series of scholarly investigations into various ethnic groups or historical mysteries using modern methods in history, anthropology, archeology, linguistics, biology, and other relevant tools. I have to say I was disappointed. Fewer than ten of the thirty-seven chapters were analytical, focused on a specific ethnic group, and discussed an historical question. Most chapters seemed to be interested in sociological issues surrounding defining or deconstructing ethnicity. Many of these chapters were ten pages of theoretical maundering followed by a page or page and a half of tepid "history." I soon found that my interest in a chapter was inversely proportional to its frequency of scare quotes. If you are looking for the book I was looking for, unless this book is now under $25 I would look elsewhere.
