Xonar U7 serves the needs of PC gamers who want to enjoy strong and clear sound via headphones, and is also ideal for listening to music as it produces much more impactful and detailed audio than onboard hardware. Connecting via USB, it requires no standalone power supply and works instantly setup-free with no need to open the PC case.
Xonar U7 engineering overcomes the space and power supply limitations of other external USB-based audio devices to offer precise and immersive 7.1-channel surround. Sound processing uses 192kHz/24-bit fidelity for true high definition output, maintaining consistent quality across all surround channels.
High quality Cirrus Logic CS4398 DAC (digital-to-analog converter) brings clarity with excellent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low total harmonic distortion (THD)
Since many gamers choose to refrain from disturbing others while insisting on the best sound quality, Xonar teams integrate a headphone amplifier on Xonar U7 to boost immersive headphone output.
Dedicated controls allow gamers to quickly adjust master and microphone volume without pausing games or going into software menus, ensuring uninterrupted action. The master volume control doubles as a clickable switch for selecting between headphone input (front panel) and speakers (back panel).
Xonar U7 connects to PCs via USB. It also gets power directly from the USB port, removing the need for a power adapter. Combined with its compact dimensions, these turn Xonar U7 into a highly portable audio-enhancer that can be easily carried and placed anywhere.

I decided to go for this card as the specifications looked great on the Asus website and fits my needs perfectly. I own the Aego M 2.1 speakers and a Sony Vaio F series Laptop. With a monitor, keyboard and mouse connected to the laptop at all times, it has become a desktop replacement. The U7 sits within hands reach for volume control and is a perfect addition to the desk. It has given a great boost in audio over the onboard laptop hardware, and is solidly built. I plan to buy a higher end set of headphones/headset in the near future, which the U7 will be able to accomodate. (EDIT: Bought the Sennheiser PC 360 Headset to accompany this - incredible jump in sound quality over plugging the headset straight into the laptop).
Things to know before purchase:
-This card is best suited (provides the most value) to a user who requires both speaker and headphone use - although not at the same time of course. There are other external usb soundcards that can serve the purpose of just headphone or speaker use.
-The headphone amplifier ranges from 32-150dB. This snippet of info was actually quite hard to find for me before purchase but shouldn't affect many users except for those with higher impendance headphones - the sort that would require a higher quality amplifier to get the most out of them anyway.
-If you are looking around the net or elsewhere on how to improve the sound quality of your music and have stumbled across soundcards and other hardware, before you jump straight to checkout try reviewing your music library first. The quality of the music being played can have a big impact on what you hear. Having your tracks in high quality MP3 (320kbps) or even better, FLAC/ALAC/WAV etc.Read more ›
It does exactly what I wanted and I would have given it 5 stars except it took hours to get working properly, now this isn't a fault with the Xonar U7 but more general problem with the whole concept of usb soundcards, I was getting popping and crackling on the audio and at first I thought the U7 was faulty, but trying it on my laptop showed no problems. After several hours of troubleshooting including the use of some advanced performance analysis tools I isolated the problem to my wifi card driver, which was causing delays for several ms for the usb controller (and several other devices) resulting in streaming audio dropping out and manifesting as pops and crackles.
Google "DPC latency" if you want to know what this is about, it can be a fairly common issue for usb sound devices and I recommend you test your DPC latency before buying a usb sound device, there are tools you can download to do this.
Originally when starting tracks there was very loud distortion and I had to turn off the Dolby theater then back on but for each and every song hence the replacement and the hope I wasnt going to need to find another type.
I use Audio-Technica ATH-M50X Studio Monitor Professional Headphones from the front headphone jack and creative 2.1 speakers using the speaker connectors at the back. Both sound way batter than clumsy Beats and when using my headphones with Dolby theater its simply stunning but maybe this is because as my eye sight has failed more my hearing has vastly improved.
Highly recommend for the superb quality of sound easy setup and easy to use software.
Be warned: AS OF SEPTEMBER 2015 ASUS DO NOT RECOMMEND OR SUPPORT WINDOWS 10 WITH THIS EXTERNAL SOUND CARD SO YOUR ON YOUR OWN IF YOU GET INTO TROUBLES.
I'm very disappointed in the product and the company. I gave it three stars as it was very easy to install, and it did make a big difference to the sound on my PC.
However, I can't get the microphone component to work with any of my microphones or headsets. I focused on my main headset, a HyperX Cloud gam,ing headset, and I called HyperX up. They talked me through some tests that suggested the headset was fine and the issue was with the Xonar U7 sound card. Not conclusive, but at least they talked to me and offered support.
So I called Asus up only to be told they only do email support for the Xonar U7. So I filled in the online form and waited and waited........... and here I am now writing them a lousy review due to their lousy support!. (ie. non existant from my perspective)
I'll keep the Zonar U7, as I can easily plug a microphone into a usb port and get full functionality, but it means I might as well chuck away the mike in my HyperX Cloud headset. Or chuck away the U7 and get something else from a company that offers proper support.
I've got three excellent monitors from Asus, I can only hope I don't ever need to call them for support with these. Asus, shame on you.
