- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 April 2012This book is called complete, and it is. It's well laid out, and easy to read. Great formatting and style. Highly recommended for understanding Linux for intermediate and above users.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 January 2012Written by one of the most experienced Linux Authors, you're guaranteed a nice flow to the book, with great layout. The Guide does cover a massive amount of topics in great detail, but has little time for "chatty" narrative as the topic is too large for that.
The book is well laid out, it's easy to follow and offers test questions for each section and a test cd. Use all practice questions. Once you're in that exam you'll be very grateful you did.
However you'll still need to have plenty of practice with the commands. A complication of the vendor neutral LPI is that you'll have to learn the commands for several different package managers... this puts tremendous pressure on your memory. Expect to work hard, and if you're only using one variant... to have to memorise 3 other versions to pass on the vendor neutral exam. Arrive early for the exam, with 2 forms of ID including a photo id (Passport or Driving Licence) and a signature ID (bank card) - as you can't sit the exam without them. Allow 15 mins for your ID to be verified.
Finally, before you sit the exam the Comptia test screen will ask you if you want to dual register for the LPI qualification, so make sure to answer yes to this question - be ready for it!!
LPI will then email you confirming your registration / results in approx 1-2 days, so it's fast.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 July 2011I bought this ebook to help prepare myself for the Linux+ exams. I've used various Linux distributions for five years now, so I'm not an absolute beginner. However the Linux+ curriculum goes into considerably greater depth in a number of areas than I have experience of. In that my knowledge has been increased, and I just passed the first Linux+ exam, I would say that this textbook seems to achieve its purpose.
It is written in a very direct style, so don't expect any humourous anecdotes, puns or jokes. It addresses the various areas of content in a thorough and logical fashion. The review questions at the end of each chapter are useful and the answers do a good job of explaining why the various answers are right or wrong.
Unfortunately, there seem to be some major oversights in proof-reading or formatting. There are a number of places where example code is shown (helpfully typeset in a different font) where there are missing quotation marks ("). This may not be a major issue in other literature, but it can make the difference between a command working or not in a Linux configuration file! There is often a reference to the missing quotation marks, otherwise I would have been unaware that some of them should have been there!
I can only assume that this is some kind of problem with an automatic conversion to Kindle format. However, it seems to me that this kind of basic, recurring problem doesn't do much for the reputation of Kindle as a viable publishing platform for serious textbooks. Please take care of this Sybex/Amazon!

Recommended for all tech people for their jobs. It has more than adequate coverage
of all the stuff you would need to pass the exams
J. R. CarrReviewed in the United States on 25 March 20135.0 out of 5 stars Well laid out and complete
While this certainly isn't an all-in-one reference guide for a Linux admin, it covers the main exam objectives well, and with enough detail that passing the Linux+ exams should be a fairly simple task. I took both in the same day, with this book alone (and five or seven years of admin experience) as my study material, and passed both handily. I will say that the book (and the exam, for that matter) tend to focus on things that a sysadmin doesn't really use, day-to-day, but it's a great refresher of those little known programs, switches, and features. You can read through this book in a couple days, and if you're familiar with Linux, really only need about a week to study for both exams.

This book is pretty useful, it makes me learn a lot about Linux that I need in my work.
The chapter are sorted properly and the questions are useful as well to understand every single chapter.
I hope I passed the exam.

Bought this as a required book for college and have used it many times as a reference for using Linux+. I would recommend this even if you are a beginner or intermediate programmer. Experts may find this book useful for some Linux+ programming too.
J. MontyReviewed in the United States on 6 October 20104.0 out of 5 stars This book is no joke..
I bought this book on Amazon when it came out a few months ago. I have the older Linux+ book (for the previous version of the Linux+ exam) but that version of CompTIA Linux+ is ending as of Oct 31 2010 (it consisted of a single 90 question exam - equiv of 6 months of Linux experience). So I was undecided on what exactly I should do: A.) Push it and take the existing test before Oct 31 2010 or B.) Just take the new Linux+ exam (actually two tests) powered by LPI. Since I had heard that the LPI version is much more comprehensive, I figured I'd go that route. Well let me tell you this book and from what I can surmise the new exam as well, is no joke. This book is way more in-depth and detailed than the previous Linux+ books. It is now recommended by CompTIA that you first achieve your A+ and your Network+ certification, as well as have 1 year of Linux admin level experience before attempting Linux+. If you want a taste of what this study book is like the very first chapter starts out with listing commands and explaining regular expressions. I've been working with Linux for some time so this was not a problem for me but if you haven't used Linux before you might want to brush up on your basics before you consider this one... The older books started out explaining what Linux was and what GNU licensing was about, etc (intro type stuff).
I have not taken the exams yet but I will report on how well I do after..
