About the Author

Rowland Parker was born in 1912 in North Lincolnshire. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all farmers and his youth was spent in the country. He was educated at Louth Grammar School, won a scholarship to Nottingham University and then trained as a teacher. In 1935 he joined the staff of what was then the Central School, Cambridge, and, except for the war, remained there until his retirement in 1972. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1940, serving in North Africa, Italy, Egypt, Syria and Palestine, where he began to take an interest in archaeology and history. He lived in Foxton until his death in 1989.

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Concise, straight forward, very informative with a touch of dry humour in places; refreshing not to have any photographs just good old fashion drawings ; for a book that was written in the 1970's it is 'time less' and also it is the old size; ie it fits in the pocket not like those B formats from the States!

Format: Paperback
"The Common Stream" is more interesting than it sounds. Parker weaves common economic, social, and other themes through an episodic history of Foxton, a village in Cambridgeshire, from its earliest known settlement to today. In doing so, he details the changes that have taken place in land use and social environments and the changing meaning of the landscape.
