Product Description

Review

'This is a highly original book: the author demonstrates in a very carefully and thoughtfully done work how foreign and domestic policies in Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy were similar; takes the views of Hitler and Mussolini seriously - as those two did - and offers the reader a substantial array of fascinating new ideas.' Gerhard L. Weinberg, author of A World At Arms

'… superbly researched, stimulating and well-written essays'. The Times Literary Supplement

Book Description

This book offers a genuinely comparative analysis of the dictatorships that launched the Second World War: their origins, nature, dynamics, and common ruin. It seeks to understand their similarities and differences historically, without recourse to failed generic concepts such as 'Fascism.' The result is an unconventional and compelling analytical overview that places Fascism and Nazism firmly in the tradition of revolutionary mass politics.

I give this book an average 3 stars (one star for the way it is written, and 4 to 5 stars for the book's content). The way which is written is very bad, and one have to think too much and have too much attention to understand what the author wants to say. For instance, the sentence below exemplify the author's style:
"And along with the ruins it bequeathed to its successor, the shining new steel-and-glass leistungsgesellschaft of the postwar era, came a society leveled and fierce individual expectations raised through the National Socialist career open to talent in war and mass murder." (page 239)

And like that, the book is full of this kind of writing, with too many German and Italian words in addition to the author's awkward style. It's not an easy reading.
As for the book's content, there is good analysis of Fascism and National Socialism regimes' similitudes and counterpoints, including history, military strength, political aims, foreign policy, fate, and many others aspects.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good start to the Nazi and Fascist Regimes 22 Jan. 2008
By Lehigh History Student - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Common Destiny provides an excellent overview of the Fascist and Nazi regimes that existed during the World War II era. Macgregor Knox sets out to provide the reader a comparison between the two in how they came to power, maintained power and dissolved. The first two chapters take an even wider view and asses the various factors that led to unification and how those factors allowed Hitler and Mussolini to take power. While the book is somewhat dated particularly with regards to recent scholarship on Italy it provides an excellent starting point for anyone wishing to compare these regimes. It serves as an excellent overview on how these regimes conducted military and foreign policy as well as the prospects for each. The book is well written and perfect for a starting look at these regimes.
