About the Author
Flynn has always been interested in the darker aspects of life and mythologies—especially vampires, shifters, the occult, and anything paranormal—ignoring the nuns at her grammar school who thought her a demon worshiper. Her outward appearance and personality doesn't exactly fall in line with her twisted humor either, and Flynn gets a kick out of people's initial reaction to how "normal" she is. So, after publishing over 100 titles under various names, it is finally time to unleash the evil twin, allowing Flynn the freedom to pursue the darker side of her imagination.

And, while the sex was good, it was overkill. I wouldn't be surprised if it was near half the book. Sex has it's place, but not at the expense of the story. I love a good adventure with sex scenes believably (dare I say intelligently) written. I can accept the orgy scenes (although not my taste), but please don't turn the MC from a near virgin into (literally) an instant overnight slut, having sex with multiple partners. And, I have to take "points" away for some truly horrendous scenes. As an example: the group is on their way to DC to inform (their) Parliament that millions of paranormals are about to be slaughtered around the world. They don't have much time and are being chased and shot at by people trying to kill them. So, what does the MC (his name is Chicago, the youngest and least experienced of the group) do, but order that their two hummers pull over onto the side of the road, have everyone get out except he and his "lover," so they can proceed to have sex. Yeah, with time of the essence and millions of lives at stake, let's pull over for a quickie. What are a few million dead if they don't make it in time. Absolutely ludicrous, but just an example of how implausible so many of the plot points were. I believe that a great many of the five star reviews must be "tainted," i.e., trying to push this author's work. No way else can you explain all the 5-star hype.
If you want to read exceptional, and sexy, paranormal romance then try either the Psycop series by Jordan Castillo Price, or the SPECTR books by Jordan L. Hawk. Both outstanding, well written series by truly talented authors. With all my venting, I do want to say that I did enjoy the premise of the book, specifically the paranormal aspects, and the action and adventure. I will continue with the series to see if the writing improves. I'm hopeful it will.
- There’s an intriguing storyline here. Lots of shifter types exist in the world all together, and they have to join forces to fight off the threat to their existence. I like it.
- If you’re into kinky sex scenes (especially those that involve sharing partners), this book has an abundance of those.
- The writing is amateurish. It doesn’t flow well, usage errors abound, and it’s mostly telling rather than showing. “I suddenly saw black spots”…”Then I suddenly felt light-headed.” Etc.
- The characters’ behaviors are over-the-top. Like, I thought I might choke a couple of times because the guys’ actions were so bodice-rippingly DRAMATIC.
Overall comments: I am intrigued by the storyline here, particularly since the story ends with an indication that the action/end-of-the-world plotline will continue in the following volumes. So I’m willing to give the second book a try, with the hope that the author’s writing improves with time.
The Coming Storm has m/m open relationship with an added third. . . If you don't like that type of story, skip this one and read the second.
My four star rating is for the series as a whole and not just this book, The Coming Storm. While this book is m/m it is also m/m with an open relationship in that a third can be added if both partners approve. While that is the pairing for this story, it doesn't hold true with the rest of the series. And while some of the romps are eye raising, and explicit, well. . . The other stories are m/m, one on one, no cheating, no sharing. At least that's books 2, 3, and 4. Obviously the series is still growing.
Chicago has this big loving and strong family. I enjoyed how they were all there for each other no matter what. There is loyalty and faith in each other and their actions. They as a family have a mission, to take vital information to the paranormal council.
There is action, mystery, adventure, and of course male on male love. Paranormals against humans isn't a new theme but in this series it's well done. War is on the horizon and they must prepare.
I enjoyed watching Chicago's family make cameo appearances as the series progresses. All main characters from book to book do play a part in each story - And they are maturing and growing as their world changes. Their way of life is gone, and they are forced to bunker down, adapt, and survive. It isn't easy. The characters in each story are well done and their situations are believable. We meet a troll, a Lion Prince, owl shifter, of all things. . . Gopher shifters, and those that can control the weather. We watch the community grow. I enjoyed each book, the characters, the situations, and solving their problems. Each story gets better and I'm looking forward to reading more. - Dan's Wife
Plus Points: A great story line, interesting and a real sense of urgency in a 'beat the clock' way.
Minus Points: Lots of angst (almost too much in my opinion)
One point I never quite got was why the main character was considered the 'man magnet' that he's portrayed as, yes he's cute and he is certainly doing the right thing but it was never really clear why all these other men were so drawn to him.
All in all a very good story, with an interesting, suspenseful story.
