I found Coming, Ready Or Not to be a really absorbing read - I had my eyes glued to it from start to finish. In fact the first time I checked where I was in the book was at 68% when normally it's about 15%. The novel starts with the murder of Gemma Cooke, an apparent domestic as her boyfriend was seen fleeing the scene and, this may be the only flaw in the whole novel but it was obvious that the boyfriend didn't do it. After this another body is found with links to the murder of Hunter's girlfriend 20 years ago and the hunt is on for a serial killer.
Coming, Ready Or Not is a police procedural with a strong emphasis on procedure which I love as it makes the fiction realistic but this emphasis on procedure does not make it boring but rather it highlights the benefits of it as no stone is unturned and all avenues are explored and accounted for. I like the relentlessness of the police enquiry machine and the gradual, logical unearthing of facts and clues. I also like the characterisation - there is just enough information about them to make them human and recognisable as real people but not enough to distract the reader from the investigation.
I think this book is a cracking example of a police procedural and well worth the cover price.

I've been meaning to read a book by Michael Fowler for some time so when I was given a copy recently I seized the opportunity. I have to say I didn't like the first few pages one little bit and thought "this book isn't for me" but stuck with it and I'm very glad I did. From the minute the police investigation begins the book takes on a completely different feel. There are several murders and lots of twists and turns in the plot to keep you gripped but for me the best bit of the book is the details of how a police investigation of a murder takes place. There are plenty of other police procedurals out there but this one is written by an ex-CID man himself and by golly it shows. Little references here and there than you know are so accurate and really do add to the authenticity of the read. The day in day out slog of the police investigation team isn't sacrificed to jazz up the plot - the investigation itself and the co-operation between three different police forces makes for very interesting reading. I'd recommend Michael Fowler to all lovers of crime fiction. I'll most certainly be reading more of him.

Really enjoyable read, one his best apart from the ending, which I thought was a bit abrupt, seemed a few loose ends left. However, some great plotting, characters, imagery and twists, so I am really looking forward to the next one.

Another excellent book in the Hunter Kerr series. As a serving police officer I applaud Michaels attention to procederual detail, but this shouldnt put you off these books. I would suggest starting with book 1 (Heart of the Demon) as the author builds the characters through each story. You really buy into Hunter and his collegues and I particularly like the way new characters are slowly introduced and then have bigger roles in later books.Excellent crime series.Looking forward to the next.

I have the 4 Hunter Kerr novels and while I have enjoyed the well crafted crime stories, I have become increasingly irritated by the repetition of certain phrases 'unmarked CID car' his 'padded jacket', Grace's makeup and grey trouser suits. There are also numerous grammatical and vocabulary errors. Undetected murder instead of 'unsolved' etc.
If these kind of things don't bother you then you can enjoy these holiday reads and skip the 'samey' bits!

Really enjoyed this book thought it better than the last one great storyline with good twists I like the characters in the book and now that I've read the 4th book I'm looking forward to more with DS Kerr and his co workers. You can tell the author was in the police force as the storylines are more realistic along with the procedures well worth the read More please Michael.

A really good fast paced thriller with a realistic plot and characters. I enjoyed reading this and found it hard to put down once I started.

My only criticism was that the book needed further proofreading as some words were missing. I had to 're read' occasionally. Other than this a good read. I look forward to other books by the author.
