Esquire - Coming Home
Top customer reviews
on 20 January 2010
Format: Audio CD
ESQUIRE is the brainchild of NIKKI SQUIRE ex-wife of CHRIS SQUIRE, the exceptional bass player with Prog-Rock giants YES. COMING HOME (1994) was the second release by the group, seven years after their debut album the self entitled Esquire (1987). COMING HOME has alot less Prog influence than the debut album, probably because Chris Squire had very little to do with the second album, unlike the first which was recorded at the Squires' home at the time, where Yes had recorded Relayer and his solo album Fish Out Of Water. If any Yes influence remains I would say it's Jon Anderson-esque than anything else. What I really like about COMING HOME is the vocal delivery which seems to be different on every track and is truely stunning at times. There's not one weak track on the album (well it did take seven years to make!.) The CD release has two bonus tracks as well and is a welcome release of an album which is extremely hard to get hold of. Don't expect anything major ground-breaking, it's more of a personal and intimate album that at times is transfixing. So what we have is an album when on release went below the radar unfortunetly and although not important is always worth a listen and a pleasant one.

Nikki Squire at her finest!

A great album, this one! I never heard an Esquire song I didn't like. This music is almost undefinable. It's been called "candy prog" by some. It's a little too adventurous to simply be categorized as pop. But it's too light and--I daresay--girly to be progressive rock. This is simply a collection of ear-candy, and a very guilty pleasure of mine.

This CD was a very pop/electric CD.

Esquire COMING HOME is a great CD. It's style is very straight forward and pop/electric. All songs are good and "ZONE of O" "THRON THOMI" and "Digital Kids" are great. It's suprising how unknown of this CD is. If you're looking for a YES style (Esquire lead singer is married to YES bassist) this might not be to your liking, but the songs do stand their ground up to YES. If you liked their songs on "YES:FRIENDS AND RELITIVES" You'll love this well-crafted CD.
