Enid Blyton's old fashioned children's stories are given an anarchic reworking by the Comic Strip team, which brought a host of comedy talent to the small screen for the first time, including Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders.

The publication of 5 spoof Famous Five books (for adults) written by Bruno Vincent, in November 2016 evoked memories of 3 earlier adult Famous Five ' adventures', shown on TV in : 1982 "Five Go Mad In Dorset", 1983 "Five Go Mad On Mescalin", and 2012 "Five Go To Rehab". Starring Comic Strip actors Peter Richardson (Julian), Dawn French (Georgina), Adrian Edmondson (Dick), and Jennifer Saunders (Anne) + Timmy the dog, these films represent a humorous expose, and an exaggerated revision of British 'attitudes' and 'values' from the 1940' and 1950's (as allegedly portrayed by Enid Blyton at that time). "Five Go Mad In Dorset" is one of the best Comic Strip productions, and is worthy of a DVD (re)release, in tandem with the other two spoofs, of which the 2012 "Five Go To Rehab" is the better. As a childhood Enid Blyton and Famous Five fan (I still own all 21 excellent adventure books), I wasn't offended by these 3 madcap adult films. Shocking, and not politically correct, but perhaps the time is right for a reissue, particularly given the apparent success of Vincent's 3 FF books for "grown ups". Watch these 3 films if you can, and make your own judgements !

2 wonderful episodes of the Comic Strip, which are a pretty much a 'comedy' version of the Famous Five books - it is all played deadly straight (by Ade Edmondson, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Peter Richardson, Danny Peacock etc) and is utterly hillarious. In 'Five Go Mad In Doset' the 5 (including Timmy, the dog) go to stay with their auntie and uncle in Devon. When they get there, they find out that their uncle, a scientist, has been kidnapped and the gang go about trying to find him. There are plenty of jolly japes along the way, but i won't ruin it for those who haven't seen it. 'Five Go Mad on Mescalin' continues in the same vein and is just as funny. This is really top draw stuff - however, this, and the rest of the wonderful Comic Strip videos have been out of circulation for a few years now - this is pretty tragic, as there were so many great episodes - here's hoping for some fresh video/dvd releases soon!
