Product Description

Product Description

The eagerly awaited debut electronic album from Maya Jane Coles Comfort is released on her own label I/AM/ME. In Maya's own words: "It's very exciting to be in charge of my debut album. It's given me total creative freedom and that is a necessity for me as an artist. I just hope that others will love the album as much as I loved working on it". This really is a personal affair for Maya who produced, engineered and mixed the album at her modest home studio; playing every instrument and creating every sound including taking on vocal duties on tracks like the lo-fi "Stranger" and the hypnotic "Dreamer". Keeping things even more personal, Maya also created the album's artwork. The album is reflective of Maya's broader musical influences both in and outside the electronic world with Comfort having hints and shades of many genres from house, R&B and hip hop through to dub, indie and techno. Featuring Catherine Pockson of Alpines, Miss Kittin, Tricky and Scandinavian songstress Karin Park.

By The Wolf TOP 50 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 27 July 2013
Format: Audio CD
Room for one more Princess in the electro-pop palace? Yeah why not!
Maya Jane Coles seems to be bringing something worthy of our attention
to the table with her debut solo album 'Comfort'. Her credentials as
both a DJ and producer underpin a collection of twelve tracks whose
spirit wobbles along a continuum in which we catch glimpses of trip-hop,
dub and stripped-down techno. She had recruited some incongrouous vocal
collaborators to the project who add variety and interest to the mix.
Ms Coles own voice is pleasant but insubstantial; a soft, breathy instrument
which is nonetheless ideally suited to the job despite it's obvious limitations.

'Easier To Hide' is a splendid little groove, rattling along on a low-hung
bass line (just a little bit dirty in the nicest possible way); Tricky joins
the party on 'Wait For You', a ghostly presence muttering away in the heart
of a dark machine; Nadine Shah, channeling Grace Jones, turns in a fruity
performance on 'Blame', which, with its shuffling beats and jangly guitar might
sound perfectly at home in a David Lynch movie and on the bouncy 'Take A Ride'
Miss Kitten does what Miss Kitten is wont to do with her usual libidinous panache.

Along with Emika's new album 'DVA' one of the best outings in the genre this year.

Recommended.

What a purchase! So pleased I bought this. I might just have to start frequenting dance floors in anticipation of any one of several of these tracks being unleashed; I can only imagine the effects. The slower tracks don't disappoint. Deep - and original - throughout: no mean feat. Thank you Maya Jane Coles.

I'm very particular about electronic music, but this is an absolute masterpiece.
The production is impressive; not "Bonobo - The North Borders" impressive but impressive.
I think Maya Jane Coles' vocals are overshadowed by the guest appearances on the album as her voice is more than capable of holding it's own.
I'd find it hard to sub-categorise this album into something more particular than electronic, but "genreless" albums are often the best.
Play front to back without touching the mouse/keyboard/hi-fi/remote control.

MJC managed to fill an album with some fantastic house moments and overall the result is a deep, fruity, original blend of shuddering tracks.
