Product description

Review

"Roberts always tells a good story that balances romance and suspense, but in this title, the narrative is deeper, the mystery is more layered, and with Alice, Roberts moves into another level of exploring physical and emotional trauma and the powerful balm of family and love. [Roberts] is moving into more complex and darker storytelling, to terrific effect." --Kirkus Starred Review

"With its take-no-guff heroine, who understands the importance of family and friends, and a compelling plot peppered with domestic details and composed of equal measures of spine-tingling suspense and sexy romance, this is quintessential Roberts."--Booklist Rave Review

"What makes this novel most engaging is Roberts's ability to suffuse her story with rich details of one family's life, as well as sizzling doses of romance and mystery."--Publishers Weekly

I almost didn't read this book. I'm a huge Nora Roberts fan and since being introduced to her work almost seven years ago I've read as much as I can. Her women are strong and relatable and I wish her men were real. But after reading some reviews I was a little hesitant. I read that the romance was boring between Bo and Cal. Alice's story was horrifying and too gruesome for a NR novel and it doesn't feel like NR writing. But I pushed through and really enjoyed it.
For those who have read reviews and might have the same apprehensions I'll say this. Yes the abuse Alice suffers is horrifying but to me it's not as graffic as other books I've read. It's the right amount of detail (think the Carolina Moon) just for the reader to hate SIr and your heart to break for Alice. I happened to like the love story. Cal and Bo are old friends who at one time she crushed on him but he saw her as his best friends little sister (though he does admit he looked once or twice). Their love is slow and feels natural and I find it hilarious that he insisted on clearing it with Chase before sleeping with her. I also thought Bo understood Cal. When his horse Sundown (you'll love him) is attacked, Bo understands Cal has to confront the attacker and even pushes back a date so she can go with him. I liked their lack of drama and the sweetness of quiet Chase falling for city girl Jessica. With the darkness surrounding Alice's storyline unit was nice to get a break and read about a clever horse and a budding romance. If they were filled with too much drama it would have been too much and exhausted the reader I feel.
Yes it doesn't read like a NR I'll admit to that. But if you stop focussing on writing styles and enjoy the story you'll enjoy the story a lot more.
Alice's story did break my heart.

A lot of negative reviews, sadly. Not our normal Nora, but surely she is aloud to venture anew. I agree Alice took over, as she should, her story was horrible beyond words, but this did not distract from the main characters. I throughly enjoyed this book, some hard to live with story lines, but life is not a fairy tale and a great author merges the sheer fictional with fact. Thanks Nora another win.

I've been a fan of Nora Roberts since I first read hot ice. I have loved almost all the stories she tell and have even read the ones that were not so great. This story of the Bodine women has left me emotionally exhausted. The trauma thar Alice went through and her enduring strength makes this novel a masterclass. It shows the power of unity, love and friendship. I am overwhelmed and cannot wait for the next book from Nora.

I'm a huge Nora Roberts fan and this book, like all her others, was a pleasure to read. A little different than some, with the main romance between Cal and Bo not taking up as much of the book as usual, but the same brilliantly described characters, touches of humour and, in this book, suspense and grit, too. There were other books I've preferred, but her writing is so good I can't give anything less than 5 stars.

As soon as the book appeared on my kindle I started to read it and apart from bathroom and eating breaks read it right through. A new Nora Roberts book is such a treat and nothing gets in the way of reading them as soon as I get my hands on them. A brilliant read. Enjoy

I have read every single book Nora Roberts has written and I have loved every single one. She has such a way if telling a love story with a little drama. Even after the hundreds of her books I am still never bored.
I love her stories with cowboys and Montana and makes me wish I was there.
This one had me crying in parts too.
I look forward to her next one! ❤
