If you were disappointed with the BBC documentary programme of the same title, you should not be dissuaded from buying a copy of this book which achieves what television did not.
Whereas the TV focus was on the life of Verus the gladiator, the book's broad coverage of all aspects of the Roman games and the huge Flavian Amphitheatre we know as the Colosseum adds to ones understanding of not only the building but the gladiatorial combat and other displays within its arena.
I bought the book as background reading for the Classical Studies element of a university course in the Humanities and, despite the dismissive attitude of academics towards what they describe as "coffee table books", this work deserves greater respect. Certainly its lavish illustration complements a text that is easy to follow, even when describing construction materials and techniques.
Entertaining and educational, its portable size makes for ideal highbrow reading material even on the train and it won't take a lot of room up on your coffee table either.

To be fair to the BBC, the tv programme is gripping and IDEAL for 13 year old Latin students; and yes, that's in a public-sector school. The book is magnificent for any level, however.

Extremely detailed book which I wish I'd read before visiting the Colosseum.
