Bought as a "Daily Deal" on the strength of the five posted reviews which were all either 5* & 4*, this purported to be a new European crime thriller with a principal to rival Aurelio Zen, Commissaire Adamsberg & Salvo Montalbano - it isn't.
It's extremely poor - the characters are flat, unconvincing and derivative, the dialogue pedestrian and the more florid passages reminiscent of someone's first attempts at Creative Writing. It's procedurally inept (for example, apparently in Spain, Police can identify vehicles' makes & models from tyre tracks - but, unfortunately, not their colour!) and the plotline is full of holes - the passage towards the end of the book in which the villain blackmails one of the two principal detectives into obeying his commands is frustrating in the extreme. The denouement itself is anti-climactic and, frankly, incredible in procedural terms.
I note that, since purchasing, another reader has also given a1* review. I agree - 1* is harsh, I know, & I very rarely award it, but, in all conscience, I can't give more.

If you enjoy a good detective thriller, thus is for you. Two police officers work together to try and find a sadistic killer who believes he will meet his master after carrying out particularly gruesome murders.
The book doesn't slow down at all and completely holds your attention through to the end.
Would strongly recommend.

This book had me gripped from around page three right to the end. A proper thriller with just about everything in it. I will not say much more as I don't want to spoil it for anyone reading this. The only thing I would say is the setting is a little different, and quite refreshing. Thanks to the author and translator, most enjoyable.

At first I was ambivalent...enjoying the story but feeling it was a little far fetched ...however I was soon drawn in and enjoying the twists and turns of the crime thriller. The psychological, mythological, astrological perspective kept me totally hooked.
I felt the frustration of the persuers and it really contributed to an amazing novel

I haven't finished reading it yet, about half way through. It's your standard grisly sadistic murder vs. jaded cop scenario but it's got some good characters, if a little stereotypical. I like that it's set in Spain, the descriptions are good. If you like gruesome thrillers, you'll like this.

A brutal and complex thriller set in Madrid. A partnership between a policeman and a civil guard involved in the hunt for a sadistic killer that turns into respect and friendship. Expect some hard to read scenes of brutality and twists and turns as to who the killer might be.

I very rarely award only 1 star - after all an author puts in a lot of effort to be able to offer us free or low price books.......... But in all honesty, I cannot give more than 1 star. Some other reviewers have mentioned the translation as being very poor - I do agree with this. Some things really annoyed me, like some well known English sayings "fresh as a daisy" and "so hungry I could eat a horse" these were translated as "fresh as a rose" and "so hungry I could eat a bison" , there were more examples throughout the book and it did grate a bit for me............
The characters seem rather wooden, no real character traits are offered although a lot of gratuitous information is offered when a new character is introduced - The biggest compliment an author can give to the reader is to trust and respect us enough to let the characters reveal themselves to us through their actions, we really don't need a potted history of each character as they enter the book - let their past and quirks be known to us through the way the deal with problems and circumstances as the story unfolds. Perhaps this author should take that on board...........
The conversation is stilted and unrealistic (again, the latter point could be due to the translation) - The plot is weak too, and as someone else mentioned, the police procedure seems rather bizarre to say the least! It does take something away from the story and quite frankly seems unbelievable at times> I found the violence contrived and not really believable.
I feel sorry to offer such a negative review on this book - but it has to be one of the worst books I have read (make that struggle to get through) in a long time.
Sorry, but I couldn't recommend this book to anyone.

In all the years I have been reading CRIME , never have I come across such a sadistic and brutish story. Apart from that it must be said that it it one NOT TO MISS if you like something different.
