Good points:
Coherent storyline, action packed story, tense atmosphere, presence of team members and a female character who isn't a love interest.
Not so good points:
Poor descriptions of characters (don't worry, most of them die anyway, in unsatisfactory ways that don't add much to the story), unrealistic character interactions (eg. privates talkback to Lt, wallflower general), unimaginative use of language (eg. There's a lot of "ing"s; nodding, standing, running etc. you'll see what I mean if you read this story). Several small nitpicks: The phrase "Lt Jack Strong" gets repeated many more times than is necessary, and there are a few cases of cruelty to the common apostrophe. I'm trying to provide constructive criticism rather than just criticism.
In a similar way this writer has got a serviceable idea for an Alienesque story but fumbles the delivery. A good try and I'll give points for effort, but he could do better, especially when compared to other authors in this genre: David Drake, Weber, etc. I didn't lose anything as this book cost $0, except the time taken to read it. Unfortunately there are actually worse books out there in this genre. I wouldn't read it unless you've already read all your other sci fi books and am looking for something to pass the time.
Caveat emptor.

If you like short, action-packed, bravado and testosterone filled, would make a great movie type military sci-fi stories and don't mind a few errors, then this could be the read for you.

If I had spent good money on this I would be annoyed but it was free so at least that's good. As for the rest of it - well the title says it all. Poor characterisation, dialogue, situations and scene setting make it a poor book.

I would have given this minus but some of the writing was clever.however if you want to be preached at and told how to see your own death this is for you, if you don't and you was want some logic and enjoyment in your sci fi then don't bother.I was really annoyed at the end and I don't like being ambushed to read the authors tripe at the end of a story, of was self indulgent and rubbish

Plenty of action and a believable plot line and the science was OK too. Worth a read.
