Gareth King is the author of numerous books on language and languages for Routledge/Taylor & Francis and Oxford University Press, including a range of well-known and popular titles written for learners of Welsh.

He did his first degree during the Cold War - emerging from Cambridge University with the then customary degree in Russian, Czech and Old Church Slavonic - and sensibly went on some years later to do an MA in Old Irish and Scottish Gaelic at Aberystwyth, learning Welsh in the process.

December 2010 saw the publication of his extensive revision and expansion of George Campbell's well-known Concise Compendium of the World's Languages, followed exactly two years later by a similar updating of the original 2-volume edition.

He now divides his time between other writing (an SF novel - Morningstar Rising - and an eighteenth-century picaresque romp - Transvectissimus - have both drawn favourable critical attention), acting as consultant for a major publisher, and working as a professional translator.

I found the book very heavy going indeed and ended up buying some simpler books and found them more approachable. The tone was very dry and academic. I will return to this once I am confident in the basics; this would put an absolute beginner off.

I am welsh but dont speak welsh, I found this book very helpful and gave lots of sentences that you had to change to welsh but by the time you got to those pages you could do so with some ease and there was space in the book for you to write, but do it in pencil because you can always erase it and practice again.
The only thing I can say about it is that it does deal with the north and south ways of speaking so you have to learn both because you cant tell which is the north and south at the very beginning and I would have liked to learn one first and then maybe go on to learn the other one next.

This book crams in a lot of information per page, so I think most people would need to work quite hard to make much progress. The equal coverage of the northern and southern dialects, while fair, could be distracting for anyone who would be happy to learn just one dialect. Perhaps the amount of audio could have been more generous too. At 159 minutes on the 2 CDs, that is just 10 minutes per lesson, or about 40 seconds per printed lesson page. If approached with a steely determination not to get discouraged, then I guess it might be as "rewarding" as claimed. Personally, I will be giving this one back to the local library and looking for a gentler introduction to Welsh.

What can i say? i've found this book astonishingly useful, everyone i know that has used it has found it useful. The man's a genius when it comes to this, as well as having brought up some other really quality pieces. Check out his grammar; it's the definitive guide. Buy what this man writes and keep it- it'll help your children as well one day.
