Although I agree that if I were starting from scratch this book would go right over my head, having got to grips with elementary Greek, I've found it very useful for 'filling the gaps'.

It provides the sort of vocabulary that you're likely to encounter in real life, such as idiomatic phrases and informal, conversational use of language, rather than then the standardised, textbook stuff. Although some of the vocab is at a level currently too high for me, I imagine I'll be able to keep dipping into the book for quite some time to come.. which will be very welcome, given the complete dearth of materials for learning Greek beyond elementary level.

The layout could be clearer (particularly in the answers to exercises, where it's hard to spot the chapter headings), but it contains explanations of grammar that I've found hard to track down (or understand!) in other books.

All in all I've found it a worthwhile addition to my library.

This is NOT a complete course - nor is it an audiobook!

It is only the audio to accompany the printed book available seperately!!!

This is not a looseleaf form of Ms Watts book - this is the ordinary paperback version slipcased with the audio material.

I recommend Colloquial Greek to language scholars. Good explanation of phonics, and generous cultural notes. Most of these "Colloquial" books are well worth studying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad 26 July 2008
By Carl W. Bergquist - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book does have its drawbacks but it is one of the better books in English. Much better than Teach Yourself Greek, for example. The only problem is its lack of organization. As far as the coordinatioon of the book with the CD's you never seem to know where you are, and there is no CD track list. The dialogues are very clearly pronounced on the CD. Some tracks, however, are nowhere to be found in the book. It has a lot of exercises (key is 49 pages) however, which is rare for the Colloquial series. There could be more exercises o the type which make you generate sentences in Greek. The vocabulary consists of about 1500 words which is a little more than would be appropriate for a basic course. The best feature is the excellent explanations which are introduced at the appropriate time and do not leave anything "hanging". No other "learn yourself" type book in English has such good explanations of grammar. Watts also doesn't waste time and space on transliterations like some other books. You will have to be patient, however, since much of the book is quite disorganised as far as the order of the grammar is concerned. In my opinion it comes in 2nd place after the Oxford Take Off in Greek. As in any course DO NOT buy the book without the CD's.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book to learn Greek i found so far 3 May 2008
By _claudia_ - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I have been attempting to learn modern Greek for the past year. I tried various books, websites, audio material and generally was not impressed with the quality - many let you learn complete sentences off by heart and that's about it. This book is the first that actually made me feel not too stupid to learn Greek. It is not too dense, grammatical concepts are introduced slowly and just when needed. Exercises (solutions are also provided) round off each chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent purchase 14 Aug. 2009

Having borrowed Colloquial Greek from the library, I knew it was the book I wanted for my greek studies, so I was happy to find that I could purchase it from Amazon.com. I can recommend the book as a great introductory course for home studies.
