This is a magical and enchanting collection of 12 stories by the well renowned Joan Aiken. The stories have a wide ranging appeal and are full of magic and mystery. It is a great collection which can be read by the more confident reader alone, who will be able to read several stories at a time, but is also suitable for those with less confidence, as the stories are of a manageable length. These stories will hold any reader's imagination long enough for them to want to finish each story. The title story 'A Small Pinch of Weather' tells of the weather woman and how she can decide what the weather will be and helps out the people of the her small Scottish town by adjusting the weather accordingly! And of how she is rescued by the Bishop despite the differences he may have with her cat. It is just one of many great stories in this book which will keep any reader entertained.

All 12 stories in this book are great. I like "The Serial Garden" the best. It's about Mark Armitage, (appeared in several stories) who like to collect garden paper-cut from Brekkfast Brikks cereal. It has a poem, which become a sort of spell, that make the magical garden real...

I recently found a box of my childhood books, including a falling-apart copy of this. I didn't remember this one, although I do remember being a keen fan of Joan Aiken's Wolves of Willoughby Chase series. Anyway, as it's a collection of short stories, I thought I would try it out for reading to my 10 yr old son at bedtime. It's not the sort of book he would choose to read to himself - he's an avid Tom Gates and Captain Underpants fan and with a bit of encouragement will read books such as the 'The name of this book is secret' series.

It was a huge success. It's old-fashioned in that the contemporary stories are set in the 60s, so occasionally I explained a few things to my son (though some were even before my time - and it was easy to carry on reading without explaining everything that was unfamiliar), but the writing was far from dull or stuffy. The more 'other worldly' stories are interspersed with stories about the apparently ordinary Armitage children, although they also have unconventional adventures. The stories are all unpredictable, and it was a novelty for my son to find that not every story has a happy ending like he is used to.

The stories are a good length - on average would finish over three nights of reading aloud, but could probably finish each in a sitting if reading alone.

We both agreed - great stories, peculiar but funny.
