It was a huge success. It's old-fashioned in that the contemporary stories are set in the 60s, so occasionally I explained a few things to my son (though some were even before my time - and it was easy to carry on reading without explaining everything that was unfamiliar), but the writing was far from dull or stuffy. The more 'other worldly' stories are interspersed with stories about the apparently ordinary Armitage children, although they also have unconventional adventures. The stories are all unpredictable, and it was a novelty for my son to find that not every story has a happy ending like he is used to.
The stories are a good length - on average would finish over three nights of reading aloud, but could probably finish each in a sitting if reading alone.
We both agreed - great stories, peculiar but funny.
