Review

"A devastating mixture of magic and fantasy."
Evening News

“Margery Sharp is an adept describer of situations; whether comic or merely piquant, embarrassing or exciting. Her dialogue is brilliant, uncannily true. Her taste is excellent: she is an excellent story teller”
The Tatler

From the Back Cover

"You can't cheer a prisoner in the
Black Castle," said the old mouse.
"But you can get him out," said the chairwoman.

Silence falls among the mice at the meeting of the Prisoner's Aid Society when the chairwoman makes her daring suggestion. Who would be brave enough to rescue a prisoner from the terrible Black Castle? It's time to turn to – Miss Bianca!

I loved the film as a child and only just discovered it was based on a book. The book is very different but a thrilling read for a 7-11 year old.

The Prisoners' Aid Society of mice have vowed to help people in need. There is a Norwegian imprisoned in the notorious Black Castle, unbreachable and with a famously evil cat in residence.

Bernard, a pantry mouse volunteers to speak to the pampered Miss Bianca, an embassy dweller who can help find a Norwegian speaking mouse. Can they find such a mouse? And how will they get into (and then out of) the Black Castle?

Non-stop action and adventure. The three leads make a good team and all have memorable traits, and the scenes with the castle cat are very funny.

I can imagine children going straight from this to the sequels. When my son is old enough I'll be showing him the film and reading him this book.

Another Amazone reviewer has commented on the lack of illustrations in this edition. I can't say I noticed as an adult, but I think if I read this to my son in a few years time he'll be listening to the story so intently he wouldn't need to see a picture.

Not too long, full of excitement and some lovely mouse heroes.

Does not have Garth Williams illustrations which are ESSENTIAL.!! Dont give this edition to a child, nor to yourself. The story is a Must - if you've grown up without it get it now. But it's got to have the Garth Williams illustrations. Without them 75% of the magic is missing.

Good book, purchased as used for uni essay, story not quite the same as the Disney film as, as usual, Disney made the story go where he wanted.

The Rescuers is a 5 star children's novel. As a child, I loved any sort of mouse adventure stories, but none were as well written as Margary Sharp's 'Miss Bianca' series; and the best of these was easily 'The Rescuers'

However, Garth Willims' illustrations were not a part of this edition, and they really are part of the book. Try to imagine 'Alice in Wonderland' with only text and you'll see what I mean!
This will still make a good read, but I'm going to order antother edition with the illustrations: The Rescuers

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved the story & illustrations... 26 Mar. 2015

Cute story!! I loved the movies growing up and I wish I had discovered this book years ago. I would recommend this book to anyone who loved Disney's movies or possibly a child in elementary school depending on the reading level 2-5 grade. However, this story is nothing like the movies. There happens to be a series on these characters, so I plan on reading the other books as well. The illustrations are nice too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little people can do heroic deeds 25 Sept. 2010

I have no reservations about this book. Adventure books are a big hit with my kids, and this one has nothing but positive values throughout. Shouldering responsibilities, relying on manners to keep peace under stressful situations, perseverance, protecting the weak, taking chances in pursuit of a difficult goal, releasing those who are unfairly imprisoned, trust in companions... it's all in there. Plus a great, suspenseful plot and beautiful language. Wow.

I loved this book. I never read it as a child and did not read it to my children (I wish I had). I read it recently because I have discovered Margery Sharp and am trying to purchase everything I can by Margery. This is a must have for parents and their children.

This was a favorite of my daughter's, so it was a natural choice for my 9 year old granddaughter this year. I ordered it with several other books, and all were delivered very timely, weeks before Christmas.
