This dictionary is rather bulky for a pocket, but it does offer a modestly good selection of words. In any dictionary one will look in vain for particular words, so a full-size, wrist-breaking dictionary must be the main source. Who wants to heft a multikilogramme tome to look for every "new" word?

Headwords are in boldface blue, with their glosses in black. The typeface is clear if necessarily small. Older users might need a magnifying glass and good light.

For students, this dictionary is an essential item.

For a concise dictionary it's massive. 1508 pages of German goodness! The middle of the dictionary consists of really useful German speaking phrases; great for oral exams and travelling. There's also a really handy list of irregular verbs and essential vocabulary. A great step to learning accurate German!

I bought this to move up from my Collins easy-learning dictionary hoping it would have a similar layout and format. I find the Easy Learning dictionary brilliant - very clear layout, gives the infinitive, perfect and imperfect for verbs and commonly used example sentences to give context, plural endings for verbs, highlights tips such as verbs which are always followed by the dative etc. It's also not as heavy to carry around.
The Collins concise dictionary is more like an English dictionary, crammed with a myriad of subtle variations which can be confusing. The font is smaller and the information less clear. It's also too heavy to carry to lessons. I have found myself sticking with the Easy Learning dictionary and, for anything not covered there, using Leo - the free internet dictionary.
