I used to have Steppenwolf compilation on Vinyl - not this one - but it got mislaid somewhere. Didn't miss it too much. I was always disappointed that they mimed on "The Whistle Test", this was a vehicle for great live bands and they were supposed to be one of them. It left me feeling they were fakes but I recently caught John Kay & a reformed Steppenwolf doing a real live set and it was excellent. Made me look for a 'best of' again.

This compilation seemed to include most of the good stuff I had on the vinyl (although I'd hoped to get "Snowblind Friend" again - a sad omission) and a few other things I hadn't heard. It works well, nothing too exceptional but a good chunk of American nostalgia. The Pusher & Magic Carpet Ride have always been great tracks but the rest are solid rock performances with some great complimentary guitar work.

I really like this album, the last track pusher is my favourite.

If you ever get the chance give this album a listen, there is alot more to steppenwolf then "Born to be Wild" and its a shame because people assume their stuff is all cheesy rock just off the back of Born to be wild and carpet ride. Which is weird because most of their tracks are drug influenced and based, the lyrics are actually quite clever "He only had a dollar to live on till next monday, but he spent it all on comfort for his mind, some say hes going blind" "Flying low, dying slow".

I like it, it almost makes me smile that no one else seems to recognise this album for the gem that it is.

there are so many Steppenwolf compilationalbums, almost countless, and this is just one of them, nothing special. Although Steppenwolf was one band, centred around singer/songwriter John Kay, they changed frequently members, especially on lead- and bassguitar, following albums could be partially made by other musicians than the one before but it didn't the performance no harm, the music is always good, that is till "For Ladies Only", a fine album in itself. Shortly after the group disbanded, to be erected soon later with a new line-upo, mainly to perform in Europe. The latterdays songs cannot stand in the shadow of the first six studioalbums. That said this is a fairly well compilation, with the regular ods and sods (I see 1 or 2 songs which are less frequently part of a compilation album). The strange thing is that one earlier viewer complains about the lack of the Hoyt Axton's song "Snowblind Friend", which indeed is not presented in this package, but the other one enthusiases about the presence of this song, by writing down a part of the lyrics, unjustfully, since it is not here, so I wonder which album he reviewed, mayby another compilation. Anyhow, this is not a bad choice, if you want a first impression on this band or a CD in place of the old vinylalbums. For the more serious minded however I would recommend the very first original albums, several packed by two through BGO (i.e. "Steppenwolf" en "Steppenwolf Second" or "On Your Birthday Party" together with "Steppenwolf 7" or "Early Steppenwolf" (live outings of Sparrow, the firstname of this outfit) combined with "For Ladies Only", not a perfect team together, because the first is raw livematerial and the other more popsongs than the bluesrockformat on the first mentioned albums. Whatever, even after 40 years (!) this music is far from dated, on the contrary, very lively and always nice to listen to.

Like many my old vinyl and turntable have been mothballed . I miss some of my old late sixties seventies music . Still stuck in the past I prefer CD's to downloads and download myself. This is a great album and contains many of the bands best tracks, and the production is great for a compilation album allowing a slight pause between tracks. Speedy delivery and now I can sit back and remember the past.

When I was young Steppenwolf were considered rather wild, progressive and left bank. Now tame, aged but once the music started I was immediately transported back to the 60/70s, sun streaming through the car window music blaring out. Back to a time when life was easy not complicated by mobiles, CDs, DVDs, mp3 all you had was records. Great album (saying that dates me) great songs, performed by a much underrated band of real musicians.

If you like 'Born to be wild' and 'Magic carpet ride' there's a strong chance you'll like most of this album. There are a few forgettable songs but as a summation of this fairly influential band from the late 60's this is very well put together.

Recording is surperb and the band really rocks. Too bad "sookie sookie" was not included in this collection. Many are familiar with "born to be wild" it still rocks. Even my 9 year old son is hooked to this surperb group and performance.
