The Legend Of Drizzt Anthology: The Collected Stories, written by R. A. Salvatore and edited by Philip Athans, is a collection of 11 previously published short stories and 1 new short story set in the Forgotten Realms universe. These stories all involve characters from R. A. Salvatore's The Legend Of Drizzt Series.

The stories in this anthology range from 1989 to 2010 and as such they vary as the author's writing matures over the years. The stories have been previously published in the various 'Realms Of' anthologies set in the Forgotten Realms and other related publication (I will post the complete story titles and original publication place and date in my Comments section for any who are interested). The short stories themselves all involve characters from The Legend Of Drizzt Series including Drizzt Do'Urden himself and his companions, as well as tales involving Artemis Entreri and Jarlaxle and even a Guenhwyvar origin story. Before each short story there are a couple of annotated pages by the author describing many things such as how the short story came to be written, his thoughts at the time and his insights into the characters. As such this adds some depth to the stories and can add to your understanding of the characters.

Overall, this is a good collection of short stories but as the majority are only republished this anthology will only appeal to those readers who do not own the original material in which the stories were published. If you are not familiar with the character of Drizzt Do'Urden then I would recommend you read The Legend Of Drizzt Series first as otherwise this will limit your enjoyment of this anthology. The first three books of the Legend Of Drizzt Series can be found in the following box set, The Legend of Drizzt: Set 1, Bks. 1-3 (Forgotten Realms) (Forgotten Realms: The Legend of Drizzt).

It's been a while since I read any Salvatore, but Drizzt has long been one of my favourite characters and I've really enjoyed following the adventures of the drow and his companions. When I saw this collection of short stories then, I was quite eager to jump back into Icewind Dale and its environs and reacquaint myself with Drizzt, Cattie-Brie, Wulfgar, Bruenor and Gwenhwyvar. Having now finished the book, I can't help but feel I've been the victim of false advertising.

The collection is subtitled "The Legend of Drizzt Anthology" and obviously features the drow on the cover, attacking some beastie with Gwenhwyvar's assistance as usual. Inside, there are twelve short stories, ranging from around 18 to 50 pages in length and each preceded by an author's foreword. Only three of these twelve stories involve Drizzt however, and this is where my disappointment began. We start with a tale of Bruenor, followed by a Drizzt and Gwenhwyvar adventure, which all seems well. In order, we then have the origins of Artemis Entreri; the origins of Gwenhwyvar; Artemis and Jarlaxle; Artemis and Jarlaxle again; Drizzt, Cattie-Brie and Gwenhwyvar; Tos'un Armgo, Drizzt and Innovindil; Zhengyi the Witch King, dragons and knights (a bunch I've not come across in my reading, though I've not read Promise of the Witch King); Thibbledorf Pwent and an Orc; another bunch of randoms I've never come across, and rounding out the end of the collection, a Wulfgar story.

Although I haven't read all of the Drizzt stories, I think it's only the Witch King that I was really missing out on before reading one of these stories connected to it, and I therefore can't say I felt confused by any of the events in the anthology. Even with this in mind, too much of the book felt like a chore to read my way through.

Also, for someone who got bored and downloaded it on a whim after having read most of the books 10 years ago, it was a nice refresher!

I've been a fan of Salvatore's work for years. Started with "The Icewind Dale Trilogy" and went from there. However, I never had the opportunity to subscribe the Wizard of the Coast magazine because I live in Portugal. This book allowed me to fill in a lot of blanks from the multitude of stories that follow the path of Drizzt Do'Urden. A must have book to any Drizzt and/or Forgotten Realms fan.

A must read for all Salvatore fans. Great short stories that pull you back to the stories from all across the legend of Drizzt series and more. Creating characters that will have you reaching for past copies of his stories and leave you wanting more from those unheard of.
