Product description

About the Author

Walter Brueggemann is Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. He is the author of numerous books, including Introduction to the Old Testament: The Canon and Christian Imagination, Mandate to Difference: An Invitation to the Contemporary Church, and Great Prayers of the Old Testament, all published by Westminster John Knox Press.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.

All these texts bear witness to the power of God for new life. That is why we are here. God is at work giving new life. The question is how to receive it. We can receive it fearfully like the Sadducees and hold on to the old rules which give us petty assurance. Or we can turn loose of our life in praise and thanksgiving and doxology, knowing that the power for life and the gift of life overwhelms our fear and our despair.

God's power for life rightly leaves us speechless. We can be speechless, like the Sadducees and go back to plot how to stay in control one more day. Or we can be speechless in amazement, like David, able only to say "thou, thou, thine," because we find no words for the new reality.

The power of life is not a religious fantasy. It is a fresh lease on keeping our baptism in the face of injustice and poverty and alienation. It affirms to us that God has not yet quit and God will have God's way. We are on our way with God, rejoicing, praising, surrendering, and obeying. We will then address this age with care and compassion, knowing that the age to come is quite safe in God's mercy.

5.0 out of 5 stars love these sermons 2 Jan. 2014

I was not familiar with Walter Brueggemann, although he is a very famous Old Testament scholar. I listened to an interview with him broadcast on the 'onbeing.org' website that was aired in Dec 2013. He spoke mostly about the prophets and prophetic imagination. I decided to start reading his works by first reading these sermons. I would like to then read the prophet Isaiah and Brueggemann's writing about Isaiah. I am looking forward to deepening my faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRUEGGEMANN'S BEST 18 Sept. 2013

This is a wonderful collection of sermons by the great preacher, Walter Brueggemann. Brueggemann is a respected authority on the Hebrew scriptures/Old Testament and preaches some of the best sermons on these texts that you will find anywhere. However, don't think these are only on the OT scriptures, for one of Brueggemann's specialties is tying together several lectionary texts into one sermon, weaving a beautiful piece of work out of several threads. This collection is great for anyone who enjoys reading intelligent, thought-provoking sermons, and also for anyone looking for a fine devotional book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brueggemann as only he can preach! 23 Aug. 2012
By Wendell L. Griffen - Published on Amazon.com

This collection is prophetic, uplifting, and relevant to living faith in our time. The sermons are down to earth, yet not condescending. The perspective Bruggemann presents about God, humanity, faith, and the claims of Christ on our living inspire, intrigue, and prompt one to sit up straight, rethink what faithful living means and how it behaves. Each sermon is readable and livable! I'm glad I have the sermons on my iPad because they help "thaw" my spirit whether I am in my study at home or traveling. This is definitely a great value on Kindle!

This man has a way with words to touch your mind, heart and soul. Beautifully written sermons touching your spirit and enlightening your minds. They encourage you to dig deeper into what may already be a familiar book...gthe Bible. He challenges you to see things in a new way...and also he can bring comfort to those suffering with whatever is troubling.

As usual WB is not for the faint hearted. I dearly love his skill making me think and ponder.
My only wish is that he was teaching in my seminary when I was a student. WB is today's only serious OT theologian and preacher with depth and love for both the scripture and all those who listen/read his work.
