How often do we come across the name of a respected and much praised writer whose language is unfamiliar to us and wish that we could judge for ourselves what all the fuss was about?
Montale won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1975, and those lucky enough to be fluent in Italian have been able to enjoy his wonderfully imaginative lyric poetry for more than fifty years.
Jonathan Galassi's lucid translations allow those of us without complete fluency in Italian to appreciate why Montale's work is so important.
Just as important are Galassi's extensive notes, that explain the linguistic and cultural complexities of these often difficult poems.
The book is well designed with very good typography and printed on good paper. It is a pity that it is not a properly sewn binding.
Thie edition is a vital contribution to our understanding and enjoyment of twentieth century Italian literature.
