In City of Spades the characters take us on a journey through London in 1957 focussing on the black immigrant population and one white man's adventures with them.
Absolute Beginners brings explosive youth culture to us, in the year of the major race riots in Notting Hill Gate.
More adventures follow in Mr Love and Justice as we follow pimps, prostitutes and police through London's shady underworld.
MacInnes' narration is compelling and very readable. The characters are funny, frightening, charming, repelling but never dull. They are a tribute to London, presenting a "warts and all" image which entertains and educates throughout all three novels.
Over fifty years since they were published, these novels represent a pivotal time in London's history and still remain amongst some of the most important writings produced about London and the myriad of personalities who inhabit it.
Very, very enjoyable.
