About the Author

Chris Nelson is a confirmed cold water soul. He grew up surfing the frigid reefs of England's northeast coast, where open ocean Arctic swells are groomed into reeling lefts and winter water temperatrues regularly dip below 5 degrees. With over twenty years experience, he is one of Europe's leading writers on surf travel and culture. He has written six books on surfing and contributes regularly to surf media across the globe as well as national magazines and newspapers on surf travel issues. During the 90's he launched Asylum and the groundbreaking Freeride, two of the UK's most influential boardsports magazines. As editor he interviewed surfing's heroes and antiheroes and on his down time, scoured the northern fringers of Scotland for unridden breaks. When not clambering through Canadian cedar forests on his way to elusive point breaks, or tramping along frost-hardened beaches in Iceland, Chris can be found surfing the cliff-lined beaches in Cornwall, where he lives overlooking the sea.

I have just bought this book as a Christmas present for my husband who spent his teens surfing the North Sea. After a quick flick through, and some further reading in this weekends Telegraph Magazine feature, I am excited to be able to give him an original surfing present. He already has a well stocked surfing library including a couple of travel guides written by the same author, but this is a totally different book. It gives a real insight into why these ordinary surfers/lunatics gamble with hypothermia and jump off icebergs to catch the perfect wave. Superbly written anecdotes make for a fascinating read, but do make yourself a nice cup of tea before reading ; I promise it will send shivers to your bones. Brrrrrrrrr!

I can do no better than quote from my recent email to Chris

"I got your book and it is the best book of its genre I have ever picked up!

You write VERY well, and I'm fussy what I read.

You've taken all the stuff we talked about and framed it beautifully, giving Thurso in particular all the flavour that surrounds it and representing the characters wonderfully.
I love your style of writing.
Please keep doing it and feel free to quote me in any reviews"

A really good book well written and illustrated with lots of very good photographs. Chris has a lovely style of writing where he has used soundbites from people interviewed and weaved them into the text to make a coherent story.

The first time that the history of hardcore surfing has been charted to my knowledge and it will be a bible for all future surfers who take up the sport in some of the most inhospitable parts of the world.

It is a truely beautiful insight into the world of the cold water surfer - not just the places and the waves but the people too. The photography is insane - really great reportage style photography mixed with awesome action shots - I don't think the pictures on amazon really do it justice to be honest. It's a wonderful mix of surf history and heritage that really contextualises surfing in the greater perspective. A beautiful book that really captures the spirit of what it means to be surfer and a must-read for anyone with even a passing interest in surfing.

Arrived quickly, good value. Bought it for a surfing friend who seemed suitably impressed and was keen to read it straight away.
