A couple of years before teaming up on The Valachi Papers, Terence Young directed Charles Bronson in this entirely disposable but rather enjoyable Friday nighter from a novel by Richard Matheson (has any living writer ever had so many novels and short stories filmed?). It's nothing special, but surprisingly entertaining if you're in the right mood, and offers the once-in-a-lifetime casting coup of Liv Ullmann playing Bronson's romantic interest. Yes, that's Ingmar Bergman regular Liv Ullmann in a Charles Bronson film. Just to make the casting even more memorable, you also get a bearded James Mason in a beanie sporting an ahtrayjuss Suvvern axescent as the lead villain of the piece, Jean Topart dubbed by Bond regular Robert Rietty and the inevitable Jill Ireland as an annoying rich hippie chick. It's a simple past-catching-up-with-man-trying-to-make-a-fresh-start plot as Mason and his gang of cashiered army gangsters try to force him into ferrying them to a drug drop by threatening his family only for him to turn the tables, but it's made with brisk efficiency, has a couple of neat plot twists and a display of some impressive driving along dangerous mountain roads courtesy of Remy Julienne.

There are multiple public domain versions of this title available (and Amazon are confusing the issue by lumping reviews for different issues from different labels together), but the UK PAL DVDs from Cinema Club/2 Entertain and Optimum are the ones to go for, boasting the best transfer in 1.85:1 widescreen.

Some ex~army convicts chase down an old 'buddy' and force him into helping them, at the threat of killing his wife and step daughter if he doesn't cooperate. They need his charter boat for use in a heroin deal, only he has other ideas and may not be so easy to push around...

Fairly enjoyable 70's Euro thriller, with Charles Bronson as the good guy and James Mason as his rascally ex~C.O.. There's also a few of the usual faces like Pistilli and Ireland offering support roles, which is nice to see and although you may have seen better acting at your local nativity production, I actually really like to see Jill Ireland in Chuck's films.
Ultimately, although this isn't action packed given it's themes of hostage/heist, it is still paced well enough to keep you entertained throughout, with an exciting car chase and some lovely scenery to boot. Bond director Young does a decent job at the helm and I like all his three films with Bronson as the star (the others being Red Sun and The Valachi Papers). If you like Bronson or are looking for an easily accessible 70's Euro thriller you'll be happy here.
The optimum release has a clear enough print, in widescreen but with no extras. As far as I am aware it is uncut, complete with blood squibs, flare shot, brief nudity and a loud neck break. All of which were cut for it's original release.
3.75/5 for a Bronson film.

An American expatriate (Charles Bronson) living in the south of France with his wife (Liv Ullmann) and stepdaughter (Yannick Delulle) runs a small excursion boat for rich tourists. But his past catches up with him when some drug smuggling ex-convicts lead by James Mason invade his home and turns his new life upside down. Directed by Terence Young (FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE), this is a fairly energetic thriller which requires some suspension of belief in order to fully enjoy it. It's a good looking film thanks to its Nice, Alpes Maritimes locations and some genuinely tense and exciting moments like a marvelous auto chase in the mountains (and I'm no fan of car chases) and when Ullmann and Delulle attempt an escape in the mountains with the psychotic Jean Topart pursuing them with a machine gun. The usually reliable Mason is miscast here as an American southerner, he overdoes the unconvincing accent and Jill Ireland as a stoned out hippie out for thrills is likewise unconvincing. Not quite a sleeper but surprisingly entertaining.

The Optimum DVD from Great Britain is in its original wide screen (1.85) ratio is a solid transfer and a revelation if, like me, you've only seen the film in the mediocre public domain transfers that are the only available DVDs here in the U.S.

One of The Lesser Known Charles Bronson films is olso one of The best Directed by Terence Young who Directed some of The earlier classic James Bond films you know you are in safe hands. This one sees Bronson The way we like To see Him protecting The ones he loves and doing what is right. The Legendary James Mason in a bit of first rate casting is The Heavy who lures Bronson into is latest caper naturally when he refuses is wife and young step daughter come under Threat. Like many other Charles Bronson movies Bronson's real life wife Jill Ireland is olso featured Though in This one her role is pretty Thin Still Ireland is always Dependable and she makes The most of her role. The female lead in This one is Liv Ullman who offers strong support alongside Bronson's character. we should olso give a mention To The young lady playing Bronson's step daughter in The film uncredited and as very little dialogue but manages To be calm and cool Throughout The entire movie. Cold Sweat comes with just The movie no extras are listed Though I have in The past owned previous releases of Cold Sweat This is one of The better prints of The movie it's an outdoor movie and it shows colours are rich as is The sound on The Disc. If you like exotic locations good car chases sailing boats Then This movie is for you and of course we should not forget our Hero The Imcompable Charles Bronson you know your in for a Good Time Five stars.
