Product description

Review

'For those who like series, mysteries, books with rich, idiosyncratic settings, engaging characters, Strong Women and reasonably hot sex on occasion ... let me recommend Dana Stabenow' Diana Gabaldon.

'A darkly compelling view of life in the Alaskan bush, well laced with lots of gallows humor. Her characters are very believable, the story lines are always suspenseful, and every now and then she lets a truly vile villain be eaten by a grizzley. Who could ask for more?' Sharon Penman.

'Stabenow is blessed with a rich prose style and a fine eye for detail. An outstanding series' Washington Post.

'One of the strongest voices in crime fiction' Seattle Times.

'An antidote to sugary female sleuths: Kate Shugak, the Aleut private investigator' New York Times.

Synopsis

Alaskan private detective Kate Shugak goes undercover to expose the illicit drug trade along the TransAlaska Pipeline, but the case is threatened when her own cover is blown and the body count begins to rise.

Having felt a little cheated with the last book by Dana, I was hoping that this outing would take me back more along the lines of the original outing rather than the last. Luckily for me this was exactly what I got with new characters alongside some old favourites which when backed with a love story, cracking action and of course a lead character that's been through the wars all round made this a book that I enjoyed.

Add to the mix an author who plays for keeps which when added to some heart stopping moments within the text all round gives you a story that will keep you reading long into the night.

A Kate Shugak mystery promises to put you in that environment, with Alaska's natural and human challenges. Kate, an astute Aleut investigator finds the source of drug dealing among workers on a pipeline and captures both the dangers and the collective pressures on these workers to buy what their dealers are selling. This is a well written convincing mystery with a good characterization of those who win and those who lose. A bit predictable, but this is a great sleuth, and I will read all of her adventures, also because the cool, assured, and independent Kate is strong and centered.

Another excellent adventure for Ms Shugak - this time she is sent off to Royal Petroleum on the North Slope oilfields undercover to find out why a man died. Drugs, sex - all add to the surreal atmosphere (plus lots of food being cooked and then abandoned due to emergencies, made me hungry!!) Dana Stabenow never fails to do her Alaskan tourist guide bit or throw in a good chunk of history (some good, some bad) but it is a real treat to learn and enjoy a rip-roaring yarn at the same time!! This novel fairly races along and has some very intriguing characters and a Kate Shugak high on drugs and in mortal danger, is very comical and entertaining!!! Read and enjoy!

I found the story exciting and the backdrop of Alaska fascinating. The author lives in Alaska so I know the descriptions of life there and of the landscape are accurate . I'm catching up on the books I've missed so I 'm ready for the release of no. 21 in May. A terrific series of books

I love these books and I am never disappointed. The only problem I had with this book is that Mutt wasn't with Kate but then Kate never missed a beat and did what needed to be done. I am reading these books out of order and find that they hold their own as an individual story.

Very interesting to learn about the set-up so far north in Alaska and Prodhoe Bay. However, the denouement was predictable, maybe this is because it is one of Stabenow's earlier books in the series.

I have read a lot of Dana Stabenow books. This one was a bit differant there where places where I couldn't put the book down and others where a bit boring. They all added up to a very good story.
