From the Inside Flap
'The American dream turning into the American nightmare ... a remarkable book' Tony Tanner, Spectator
Controversial and compelling, In Cold Blood reconstructs the murder in 1959 of a Kansas farmer, his wife and children. Truman Capote's comprehensive study of the killings and subsequent investigation explores the circumstances surrounding this terrible crime and the effect it had on those involved. At the centre of his study are the amoral young killers Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, who, vividly drawn by Capote, are shown to be reprehensible, yet entirely and frighteningly human.
The book that made Capote's name, In Cold Blood is a seminal work of modern prose, a remarkable synthesis of journalistic skill and powerfully evocative narrative.

In the 3 succeeding chapters, the police are looking for these 'persons unknown' until the answer presents itself. And throughout we learn more of the killers, though not enough to comprehend their motivation.
Shocking and highly readable.
This really is Truman Capote's masterpiece and the best true crime book that I have read, it will be a long time before I read another as good. As soon as I picked it up, this book immediately had me hooked and I couldn't wait to finish it, the only trouble is that it had to come to an end.
'In Cold Blood' is the story of a brutal, meaningless slaying of a well-respected, middle-class family in a small Kansas town in 1959. Four members of the Clutter family were killed by two ex convicts Richard "Dick" Hickock and Perry Smith. The crime shocked America and Capote spent four years researching this brutal case and speaking to many local people living in the area. His research paid off and the result is a masterpiece of story-telling, a gripping detective story, factual, suspenseful (yet sensible) and chilling. The author manages to really get into the heads of the murderers, their childhoods and what led them to do the things that they did, so detailed and well written is this book that the readers feels as though he knew them personally. Even the minor players in this tragedy are well documented so that the complete and full story is told.
I honestly can not recommend this impressive work enough, it is brilliantly crafted to keep readers hanging on, and based entirely on fact. I know that 'In Cold Blood' will keep you hanging on until the very last word, it certainly had that effect on me and kept me engrossed for a week.
