Review

One of the stupendous books of the decade (Sunday Express)

The American dream turning into the American nightmare . . . a remarkable book (Spectator)

From the Inside Flap

'The American dream turning into the American nightmare ... a remarkable book' Tony Tanner, Spectator
Controversial and compelling, In Cold Blood reconstructs the murder in 1959 of a Kansas farmer, his wife and children. Truman Capote's comprehensive study of the killings and subsequent investigation explores the circumstances surrounding this terrible crime and the effect it had on those involved. At the centre of his study are the amoral young killers Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, who, vividly drawn by Capote, are shown to be reprehensible, yet entirely and frighteningly human.
The book that made Capote's name, In Cold Blood is a seminal work of modern prose, a remarkable synthesis of journalistic skill and powerfully evocative narrative.

An absolutely brilliant reconstruction of the 1959 mass murder of a whole family in a remote Kansas town, by two drifters for no very logical reason. Capote sets the scene brilliantly in the first chapter, as he jumps from the family living their ordinary day to the two murderers, chatting, driving. The reader knows an awful event is about to happen; as little events happen, such as the neighbour's child coming over to visit, you wonder whether she is going to be harmed or will she get away in time...
In the 3 succeeding chapters, the police are looking for these 'persons unknown' until the answer presents itself. And throughout we learn more of the killers, though not enough to comprehend their motivation.
Shocking and highly readable.

I had heard so much about 'In Cold Blood', it was a book that I had been meaning to read for so long, I am now kicking myself that I did not do so sooner.

This really is Truman Capote's masterpiece and the best true crime book that I have read, it will be a long time before I read another as good. As soon as I picked it up, this book immediately had me hooked and I couldn't wait to finish it, the only trouble is that it had to come to an end.

'In Cold Blood' is the story of a brutal, meaningless slaying of a well-respected, middle-class family in a small Kansas town in 1959. Four members of the Clutter family were killed by two ex convicts Richard "Dick" Hickock and Perry Smith. The crime shocked America and Capote spent four years researching this brutal case and speaking to many local people living in the area. His research paid off and the result is a masterpiece of story-telling, a gripping detective story, factual, suspenseful (yet sensible) and chilling. The author manages to really get into the heads of the murderers, their childhoods and what led them to do the things that they did, so detailed and well written is this book that the readers feels as though he knew them personally. Even the minor players in this tragedy are well documented so that the complete and full story is told.

I honestly can not recommend this impressive work enough, it is brilliantly crafted to keep readers hanging on, and based entirely on fact. I know that 'In Cold Blood' will keep you hanging on until the very last word, it certainly had that effect on me and kept me engrossed for a week.

Having seen both films inspired by this book I decided it was time to read it. It's quite exceptional. A unique hybrid, part novel, part reportage infused with deep humanity yet unsentimental and clear headed. I now understand why Capote found it impossible to write anything substantial after this and that is very sad ... but what he gave us is a masterpiece ... and if I could write one paragraph as good as any in this book I would be elated

The timeless classic by Truman Capote. I read it years ago but have no idea what became of my original copy. I bought this terrific updated Penguin edition in order to read it again. I can't add anything to what has already been written about this book, just to mention that this is a worthy edition to buy if you are somewhat confused by all the versions out there.
