Product Description

Product Description

Led by future Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Weston, Ashkan
were together for only a matter of months before imploding.
However, they did leave behind a small but perfectlyformed
legacy in the shape of In From The Cold, a blistering,
52-minute slab of turn-of-the-decade British psychedelic /
progressive blues rock that, in January 1970, became the
first release on Decca s new underground label Decca Nova.
With Weston s frenzied, proto-metal guitar heroics matched
all the way by Steve Bailey s powerful, Spooky Tooth-style
lead vocals, the album received encouraging reviews, only
for the band to split on the eve of its release. Now a major
collectable, In From The Cold has been heavily bootlegged
over the last couple of decades, but now receives a longoverdue,
first-ever official reissue.
The definitive issue of a highly regarded album, this release
features restored artwork, master tape sound and sleevenotes
that tell the band s story for the first time, with the
reclusive Weston giving a highly illuminating first-ever
interview concerning his time with the band.

"Ashkan" was the name of the IIIrd dynasty of Persian kings (the only explanation known to me) adopted by British act from the 60s, which was up to a certain point resurrected from "Black Cat Bones" (BARBED WIRE SANDWICH) and for several years was pushing around a crafty concoction of hard rock/acid/blues with occasional ventures into prog. The musical inspiration was based on borrowing unashamedly from Spooky Tooth, Winwood/Traffic and Cream, and heavily leaned on guitars - very much in line with Cream or Procol Harum. On the other hand, it was a pretty original sound - heavy and aggresive, not medidative and melancholic. The voice of Steve Bailey is powerful and impressive growling (a la Cocker) with the solid backing from Ron Bending, Terry Sins and Bob Weston (who in 1972 joined Fleetwod Mac as guitarist). In 1969 "Ashkan" recorded and the same year released (or it was 1970?) this album for "Nova" - "progressive" subsidiary of "Decca", known for dropping talented and promissing musicians at the beginning of their career. "Ashkan" went to obscurity to be brought back now. Quality album - better this than many fakes of "neo-classic rock" or "stoner"

--But at least the music on this album is heavier than anything that Joe Cockers ever recorded.
Ashkan included among their ranks a future member of Fleetwood Mac on guitar (Bob Weston), and judging by what I have heard on this excellent album, he is a good player too. In from the cold was the first release on the short lived Decca nova label, and is a fine collection of heavy psychedelic blues rock that is slightly different to other blues rock of the period. One song "pratically never happens" appears on the compilation album Strange Pleasures; a superb collection of Decca/Deram releases.
Hard to decide which song is best, thou a possible candidate could be the last track on the album (darkness). A hard rocking tune that is ahead of it's time.
If heavy guitar based late 60s/70s blues influenced rock is your thing, then I think this record should appeal to you.

4.0 out of 5 stars 1970 British blend of prog/hard/acid 4 April 2010
By Golovanov Alexey - Published on Amazon.com

"Ashkan" (the name of the III dynasty of Persian kings - I couldn't find any other explanation) was a British act of the end of 60s, who recorded in 1969 and released the same year (or 1970) this album - "In from the cold". The band (up to a certain point build on the ashes of Black Cat Bones): Steve Bailey - vocals (pretty heavy growling, reminds Joe Cocker), Ron Bending, Terry Sins, Bob Weston (who in 1972 joined Fleetwood Mac as guitaris). The music was a crafty concoction of hard rock (leaning heavily on guitars - venturing into Cream and Procol Harum), psychedelia/acid, with occasional raids into progressive. The band was borrowing unashamedly from Spooky Tooth, early Winwood/Traffic, and Cream - but they sound more aggressive, and the vocal is not melancholic and meditating - it's true white stoned blues. Only one album extists (to my knowledge, at least) which was originally issued by "Nova" - progressive subsidiary of "Decca" (known for mindlessly dropping very promising musicians). This one - is an excellent re-issue by "Grapefruit Records" of the UK (a division of Cherry Red - we all owe them recent re-issues of "Rare Bird"). Decent album - if you are into that kind of music
