Product Description

Product Description

The BPW-400A is Cokin's wide angle P-Type Holder, and attaches to your P-Type adapter ring in the same way as a standard P-Type filter holder. The Cokin BPW-400A is an extra slim holder that helps eliminate vignetting down to 20mm focal length.

Whereas a standard filter holder can carry three filters at a time, the Cokin BPW400A can only hold one filter (can be a polarizer) and allows the use of filters with super wide lenses (focal lengths under 20mm) 35mm format.

Before I start let me just say that the objective of this and any review I write is to evaluate the product in terms of intended functionality and quality or lack thereof, not to moan and downgrade items because of slow delivery or poor packaging, which in my opinion is totally unhelpful,so here goes.
I own a Canon 10-22mm EFS ultra-wide angle lens which I use for landscape. This filter holder is designed with this type of lens in mind,it is slimmer than the 'normal' A series holder the intention of which is to reduce or eliminate vignetting at the wide focal lengths 10/11/12mm and so on.Thus far I have experienced no extra vignetting at 10mm,and regardless I always use the correction software in Canon DPP or Photoshop or some such anyway so in terms of this function its all good!!
Next ease of use, well its very easy straight out of the packet, just remember you will need to buy the correct adapter ring for your lens, these are not supplied but are available in all sizes at a reasonable cost.
The quality of the plastic is good, the product is sturdy and should last a fair while, although I do feel that the price is a bit too high when you consider that the 'normal' A series holder can be bought for around £6.00 at the UKs biggest on-line marketplace. Please note that this holder can only accept one filter at a time,I am about to experiment with this system in conjunction with a slim screw in filter,I will report on the results soon.
So all in all it does what says and does it well, very highly recommended beginners rectangular filter system, buy it!!

If you do landscape photography, graduated ND filters are 100% essential. This system is nice because you can move the filter up and down to place the ND where you want it in the frame. However, if you're shooting with a wide angle lens, you'll definitely need the wide ange adapter to prevent vignetting. The wide angle adapter hold just one filter as opposed to three with this filter holder.

It was really hard to get the lens adapter into it and after putting it on and taking it off a few times one of the "lips" had broken off - the other "lip" is worn down! I wish they'd reinforce the holder with metal where its needed. I have settled to buying 3rd party holders which cost a fraction of the cost of these for now.

I purchased this in anticipation of being able to use Cokin P ND Grads on Sigma 10-20mm DX. I read on several online reviews that 10-20mm DX Nikon mount suffers from vignetting with the normal holder. So this holder solves the main purpose. I did not notice vignetting even at 10mm.

So in summary, if you have a Nikon D90, Sigma 10-20mm, infuriated by the behavior of UWA at 10mm, have decided to use Cokin P ND Grads to cool yourself and the lens down... this holder is good. No vignetting at 10mm.

Go for it.

Good quality and does exactly what it should. My only complaint would be that the description can be misinterpreted which might explain some people complaining that they are still seeing vignetting between 10mm and 13mm on a variety of lenses. The description states that this will work with focal lengths UP to 20mm on a 35mm camera. There are two things to note here - I think it should say DOWN to 20mm as we are only concerned with the minimum focal length before vignetting occurs. And anything above 20mm is constrained by lens diameter not the field of view. Secondly, 20mm on a 35mm camera is equivalent to 13mm on a DX camera. This will therefore theoretically start vignetting at under 13mm on a DX format.

I can honestly say that I don't see any vignetting using a Nikon 12-24mm with a UV filter screwed on the front of it. You can try removing any filters (UV, Skylight etc) that you may have screwed on the front of your lens which places this holder closer to the lens and therefore removes more (or all) of it from the field of view.

I don't see any of the quality issues others seem to be seeing either. Everything feels robust and everything fits. I've had the standard Cokin holder for eight years and don't see why this one won't last either.

I paid £14.00 for this holder. It was supposed to come with a dust cap or cat as the details stated. It did not. I also found there was not a pinch grip part to make screwing it to the lens easier although I can deform the whole thing to help lock onto the 77mm adapter that then enables screwing into the lens. I think because of this, it is over priced. I can confirm that when screwed onto a 10 - 20 Sigma wide angle lens with a UV filter on the lens, that the holder does not appear in the shot even at the widest setting.

Item was brought to be used with Tokina 11-16mm. With latter body and lens, you will find vignetting from 11mm to 13mm, filter holder mounted only (i.e. no filters like polarizers included in setup). Also, holder does not fit easily, and will need to bend (flatten) slightly in order to mount. Mounted with stealth gear 77mm ring.

On its own its not bad, but it was meant to go with cokin p164 polarizer, which produces heavy vignetting up to 14mm.

Using this Filter holder on a Nikon 12-24mm lens, only issue I've found is with using third party lens rings and holder when fitted is very lose and moves to easy allowing filter to turn when you don't want it to. However when using Cokin filter holder lens rings don't get any issue so guess their own lens rings a slightly thicker
