This is a quirky and compassionate story of a woman whose hard life is marked out by terrible disappointments and small consolations, and whose quest for love is ultimately fulfilled by the vision of a parrot. A synopsis of the plot, makes it sound depressing, but I found it more wry. Unlike the famous Madame Bovary, the heroine lives slow and dies old, and her sufferings are nothing particularly out of the ordinary for her small town life. The interest of the story is in her individuality.

Julian Barnes' novel 'Flaubert's Parrot' takes the writing of this book as a starting point.

I bought this book along with an audio CD to help my ear for spoken French. I received them both carefully packaged and in record time, so I could listen to the CD and read the novella at the same time. The book is lovely, illustrated and with lots of footnotes and introductory notes. The CD is nice and clear and beautifully read. The story is so sad! But very beautiful.
