This book fills a major gap in qualitative research methods courses. Saldaña has accomplished what has not been done before - creating a text that clearly identifies the many choices one has in coding their data. I wish I had this book when I started conducting qualitative research. It should be required reading for all.

An excellent handbook that helps demystify the coding process with a comprehensive assessment of different coding types, examples and exercises. As such it is a valuable teaching resource and it will also be of use to anyone undertaking qualitative analysis.
The Coding Manual describes the qualitative coding process with clarity and expertise. Its wide array of strategies, from the more straightforward to the more complex, are skilfully explained and exemplified. This extremely usable manual is a must-have resource for qualitative researchers at all levels.

The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers, by Johnny Saldana, was not around when I learned to code qualitative data. I wish it had been...Saldana provides a skeleton on which to hang qualitative data analysis, which I have not seen in other approaches to the subject. (Molly Engle, American Journal of Evaluation)
About the Author
Johnny Saldaña is Professor Emeritus of Theatre from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts’ School of Film, Dance, and Theatre at Arizona State University. He has been involved in the field of theatre as a teacher educator, director, playwright, and qualitative researcher. Saldaña’s research methods have been used and cited internationally for studies in K-12 and higher education, the fine arts, business, technology, social sciences, government, social services, communication, human development, sport, health care, and medicine. He is the author of Longitudinal Qualitative Research: Analyzing Change Through Time (AltaMira Press, 2003), recipient of the 2004 Outstanding Book Award from the National Communication Association’s Ethnography Division; Ethnodrama: An Anthology of Reality Theatre (AltaMira Press, 2005), an edited collection of ethnographic-based plays; The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers (Sage Publications, 2009; second edition, 2013), a handbook on qualitative data analysis; Fundamentals of Qualitative Research (Oxford University Press, 2011), a commissioned introductory textbook and volume one of the Understanding Qualitative Research series; Ethnotheatre: Research from Page to Stage (Left Coast Press, 2011), a playwriting primer for performance ethnography and recipient of the American Educational Research Association’s Qualitative Research Special Interest Group’s 2012 Outstanding Book Award; and Qualitative Data Analysis: A Methods Sourcebook, third edition (Sage Publications, 2014), a commissioned update and revision of the late Matthew B. Ultimately, whilst I didn't realise that there were so many ways to drag and drop text using CAQDAS (and I didn't know what different methods were called - which is why I reference the book in my publications), I found the book frustrating to use because I couldn't find the right coding method for my methodology and research design, despite dozens of coding strategies reviewed with appropriate-sounding names.
I give this book 3 stars out of 5, but please note that I'm a researcher with a PhD at a UK university. My review is based on my needs and understandings, but lecturers teaching research students how to code may find the book useful as an introduction. It is well-written, offers definitions of coding and reasons to code, and offers readers a glossary and references for further reading.
Saldana writes in a usefully detailed, but not patronising way, to provide clear advice on how to code qualitative data. He gives very detailed examples and analysis of when different techniques are being coded.
What I liked most about the book was:
1) Clear organisation made it easy to follow and dip in and out of
2) He is open to the book not being a specific 'how to guide' i.e. he tells you what you COULD do and gives you the knowledge to DECIDE what to do for your research.
It is probably one of a kind in terms of scope and coverage on a tricky topic to get to grips with.
N.B. Read with Qualitative Data Analysis by Miles, Huberman and Saldana will form a very authoritative set of reference texts.
