Mickie Most was known for producing hit singles and mostly worked with mainstream pop singers and groups. He was therefore not the most obvious choice to produce music by American singer Julie Felix, who at the time was a very popular folk singer in her adopted home of Britain. Still, it seems that he was up for the challenge of helping Julie have a major pop hit, while Julie liked the idea of having a pop hit single as long as she could stick with folk music.

This collection contains everything that Julie recorded for RAK, all of it produced by Mickie. There were several singes and one album. Three of the singles made the UK pop charts, one (a cover of El condor pasa, re-titled If I could) peaking just inside the top 20 and the other two (Heaven is here, Moonlight) peaking just outside the top 20. Once Mickie realized that he wasn't going to be able to produce a really big hit for Julie, he suggested she sign for another record label.

The album occupies the first twelve tracks of the twenty here. The three hits are among the eight bonus tracks, although a different version of Moonlight was recorded for the album; both versions of Moonlight are therefore included here. Two singles and their B-sides were taken from the album but didn't chart.

Mickie encouraged Julie to write her own songs, which she did. Most of the material here is Julie's own work. It is clear that Mickie and Julie worked well together, but that's probably because Mickie didn't try to push her into recording stuff she didn't like, which he sometimes did with other artists, Lulu among them.

Sometimes we don't know what we are missing and that was certainly the case here. Julie charted with "El Condor Pasa" and "Moonlight" in months prior to the release of this gorgeous album. "Fire, Water, Earth and Air" should also have charted but it didn't and ... oh! if you enjoyed ANYTHING you ever heard by Julie Felix, just BUY this cd. Every track is excellent. Now remastered with all the extra singles of the time.

I was suspicious that this was a re-recording but no - the great Mickie Most album with Julie Felix on CD for the first time. Each time you play it it becomes fresher and fresher. It is almost hypnotic in its effect - the best ever Julie Felix album reproduced superbly.

I was hoping one of these days-now i HOPE they dont mar the beautiful Gini Barris GF/front cover with ugly company logos, "bonus tracks" "Expicit lyrics" (joke) etc the whole cover was a work of art orig on EMI-RAK was GF with NOTHING but a pic of Julie on front, and inside a wonderfull inside panoramic painting by Gini Barris (also did King Crimson LIZARD)
all the print and credits were on the back cover (the other half of Julie)

HASH(0x996b0b04) out of 5 stars Folk music produced by Mickie Most 31 May 2011

Inevitably with the involvement of a pop music producer, the music here is less rootsy than Julie's earlier music with Decca, but Julie's contemporaries Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and Judy Collins didn't stay with the rootsy music with which they began their careers with either. In terms of overall quality, there isn't a lot to choose between this music and Julie's earlier Decca music. Fortunately, we don't have to choose between them. We can have both, if we have the money.

Julie's psychedelic album. What could be bad about that?

"All in all it's all the same. But call me if there's any change." (Nothing to do with the album... just needed ten more words for the review.)

As an album it has its limitations, with Julie Felix's raspy voice, but does include the song 'If I Could' and I prefer her's to Simon and Garfunkels' version.
