Closer East presents a lush canvas - life in India on the brink of independence, a young man striving against long odds to create a better life for himself and his young family, an older man trying to correct a life that went off in directions he couldn't control, the joy of reading and collecting books, the romance of trains and travel. Anticipating the meeting of these two protagonists is just one of many pleasures I found in reading this delightful first novel.

An exquisitely written tale of intersecting lives. Glick is a powerful storyteller and his characters are warm-blooded and vivid. I could smell the mustiness of his Bombay bookshop and the beer-stained carpets of his East London pub. Closer East is an elegantly crafted story and its evocative imagery has lingered long after reading its final page.

In this debut novel, the author takes the reader from the privileged confines and private clubs of London to a foreign workers camp in a Saudi Arabian oil field. Along the way, there are passages of beautiful prose and of character description. Once engaged, the reader will find this book hard to put down.

A moving story of stubborn faith. This poetically written novel manages to be both heartbreaking and heart-warming at the same time. Closer East was not just a compelling read, but also a moving experience I won't soon forget. A tour-de-force first novel.
