Product Description

Review

An invaluable guide to clinical skills for OSCEs ... A must have for all students. --The International Journal of Clinical Skills

This excellent book on clinical skills for OSCEs is concise, informative, and comprehensive. I have no doubt whatsoever that anyone who has mastered its content will sail through the final OSCE and indeed enjoy the experience. --Professor Sir Cyril Chantler

Ecclesiastes' comment that 'Of making many books there is no end and much study is a weariness of the flesh' is as true as ever, but this book is so brilliant and useful that it is well worth all the hard work that went into its production. --Professor Lord McColl

This book is very well laid out and helpful for all clinical exams. The text is clear and concise and the DVD helps to put it all together by watching doctors carry out histories and exams.

I would recommend it to any medical student preparing for OSCEs or other clinical exams. One thing I would mention though is that your medical school may require you to carry out examinations slightly different to the text; so be careful and check your own mark schemes!

After six years at medical school I have become very accustomed to having at least five or six books piled on my desk for each topic. It is very hard to find a book that covers everything you need to know. Clinical Skills for OSCEs is the first book that I have come across where I can finally clear my desk and have one book in front of me. Such a joy! The book cleverly covers everything in a clear and succinct manner. It is a very rare find to have a book that you can rely on to provide you with a concise yet thorough approach to medicine and surgical clinical skills.

The book also comes with a superb DVD of clinical examinations. Before discovering this book and DVD I had been using youtube for clincal examination videos. However it is often very hard to distinguish between trust worthy videos and complete rubbish, this wastes a lot of time. It is fantastic to have a collection of videos that have continuity in the approach to the patient and at a very high standard. Not only is the DVD scholarly and informative but it also makes for a very welcome break from book work.

This is a must have guide to OSCEs in the run up to finals and indeed throughout the whole of medical school. I wish that I had found the book earlier so that I had a book to accompany me from the very beginning. I highly recommend starting preparing early for OSCEs and this makes the perfect guide.

I bought this book after spending a few days reviewing comments on various sites. I have to say I was not disappointed. This is a really helpful tool for the OCSEs- but it should not be regarded as a replacement for your own uni's clinical teaching! I would pre-read each topic before our clinical skills classes. I found that this prepared me very well for each topic, and gave me a lot of confidence for the class and the exam itself. The DVD was also amazing- I would watch the history taking/clinical exams etc before I went into each tutorial. In our final OSCE exam of the year I scored 9 excellent/good out of 13 stations- and I can honestly say that I did so because of this text. Again, it was a good supplement to clinical skills classes and great prep for the OSCE exam.

The Irony is I have bought many OSCE books for my finals. I failed them last year and I'm resiting finals. I got the second edition of this book free from the hospital library (as they were about to throw it out) and decided "why not". it has been the best book so far!! very concise and useful for developing the everyday skills you will need on the wards.
