Cliff Jones was born in Swansea and signed for his hometown club while working at the local docks. A proud Welshman he played 59 times for his country and in 1958 he played in the World Cup against Pele. He moved to Tottenham for a British record fee of 35,000 and became a fully-fledged star - famously being part of the team that won the League and FA Cup double in 1960/61. Soon after I used to go to WHL on a Saturday to watch reserve games - yes, in the "old days" reserve matches were always at the stadium of the home team !!
Great days too - you could go anywhere in the stadium - up on the "shelf" - behind both goals - under the main stand - you could do laps of the stadium during half-time to keep warm !!
Cliff's book captures all those great days, and gives a fascinating insight into life at Tottenham - and his other clubs.
Couldn't put the book down !!
My only gripe is that Cliff didn't make mention of the fact that me and my mate Paul used to serve Mrs Jones in the Co-Op ;-)
......and when Cliff and his son Steve thrashed Paul and myself at tennis in Connaught Gardens - Cliff always was a WINNER !!
Cliff Jones was born in Swansea, and first played League football for Swansea City (then Swansea Town) in 1952. He appeared 25 times as a winger for the club before being called into the Welsh national side. Cliff was part of the Wales side that beat England 2–1 at Ninian Park on 22 October 1955. The goal Cliff scored on that magical night (at least for Welsh supporters) he credited as his best ever goal. He played 59 times in all for Wales, scoring 16 goals for his beloved Wales.
In 1958, his life changed forever. He joined Bill Nicholson’s up and coming team. He was bought for £35,000 fee. Today he would be worth millions. In 1960/61 season – the first season I started going to Spurs – he helped Spurs capture the double, the first club to do so that century. A year later, he helped his team, again, recapture the FA Cup. The following year he won another trophy; this time Spurs became the first British club to win a European trophy, the European Cup winners’ Cup. In all he played 318 games for Spurs, scoring 135 league goals (1958-1968).
To celebrate his success he has just released his autobiography ‘Cliff Jones: A Wonderful Life’. This is his story.Read more ›
