movies, and bought this one...

More Kung Fu meets Blaxploitation, which is a genre of it's own, and is all good fun. Tamara
Dobson kicks ass, and has more groovy outfits and makeup. Only wish they made another
Jones film... oh they did, Indiana Jones... but these movies are better...

I simply love this movie. I bought it for Tanny and she does not disappoint. An added bonus is the presence of Liu Lu Hua, a Shaw actor who was discovered while working as a hotel manager. Liu does not star in a lot of Shaw movies so it is a rare treat to see him here in a small role. It is simply a guilty pleasure to watch Tamara and Tanny kick serious ass in this beautifully remastered letterboxed dvd. Grab this one before it goes out of print!

Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold is the 1975 sequel to the 1973 hit Cleopatra Jones starring Tamara Dobson. The DVD version has four minutes of cuts from the original 96 minute run-time. There are no special features on the DVD.

Casino of Gold was not the hit the original was, in part because the Blaxploitation genre had largely peaked the previous couple of years. Equally though the sequel does not have quite the sizzle the original offered. The weaknesses of poor acting, bad directing, and a flimsy plot stand out more without the crackle of interesting people on screen. Still, Casino of Gold is a fun if silly blaxploitation action flick.

Lead actor Tamara Dobson is much improved from her debut as Cleopatra Jones. Her delivery is less stilted and she seems to be concentrating a little less on her lines. There is a confidence about Dobson that matches her towering height. She has far more action sequences in Casino of Gold, taking on an array of smaller guys in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong (and Macao) setting makes this a different environment from the original. The set-up is pretty much exactly the same though. Cleopatra takes on a heroin gang run by a slightly pervy woman. The cuts to the film may well have been to the soft porn section in which the lead villain has an unnecessary short kissing scene with writing naked women in low light. Other than that the white lead villain is a lot less despicable a character as the one Cleo faced the first time round.

Stella Stevens as Dragon Lady does not have a huge amount to go on. Her character is not especially outrageous, she's a criminal overlord controlling the heroin trade coming out of Macao. Stevens is perfectly fine but lacks defining features for her character.

Part of the issue is in the transfer of activity from the US to Hong Kong. The reasons for this are obvious - the 70s obsession with Kung-Fu films and the audience crossover between Blaxploitation and Kung-Fu cinema. The action in Hong Kong gives quite an amusing image of life in the then British colony 40 years ago - the waterfront cityscape clearly drastically changed in the decades since.

Tamara Dobson towers over her Hong Kong opponents. They do though at times give her some trouble with their Kung-Fu and sheer numbers. The fight scenes are all totally chop-socking and Dobson's long limbs are completely unwieldy but it is good fun nonetheless.

Dobson does not have to do it all alone. Alongside her is the friendly local Ni Tien played by Mi Ling Fong. She's a nice foil for Cleo, someone who can help the hero out by understanding the local issues but who lacks the sheer audacity of Cleopatra Jones. Mi Ling Fong gets stuck into some of the fight scenes and for the climactic sequence at the casino she looks stunning.

The look of the film is dominated by Cleo's extravagant wardrobe. Some of it is clearly too hot for Hong Kong but the incredible glittery outfit outfit for the concluding sequence is amazing. Hong Kong is shown from its grimier angles. Aside from the casino the setting is largely more down-trodden areas, keeping the socioeconomic feel from the original.

The plot is thin but that's perfectly ok in a blaxploitation fick. It is simple fun. Cleo is a bit too bolshy but giving her a local foil really helps out. There's good reason why the sequel isn't held in the same regard as the original but it is an upbeat and fun 70s Blaxploitation flick.

It's too bad we never got a series of films, Cleopatra Jones was a fun character to hang with.

If you're into Tamara Dobson, this is a must have. Unlike her first Cleopatra Jones character, this Cleo is way over the top. The dialogue is cheesy and campy, her makeup is outrageously overdone.She changes costumes in every scene and not taking herself to serious, but having fun with the character. Her Wardrobe alone is worth seeing,designed by Giorgio Di Sant' Angelo one of the top designers of that era. The woman is a walking fashion show. All of this is why I love this movie. It's the 70's at it's best.
