Here we have twenty stories of a professional cat groomer going into often-hilarious “battle” with felines whose minds are fixed upon doing anything but being groomed. To avoid spoilers I won’t reveal if all of the author’s adventures end in victory but I will say that I admire her patience and dedication. Most of us have had experiences where we’ve gone almost insane trying to control a pet cat (yeah, right, as if that’s ever going to happen,) but few of us have had a confrontation that has ended with us in hospital – and then mirthfully recalled the tale. Anita recounts her experiences in prose written with warmth and lightness of touch, deeper understanding of the feline mentality, peppered with a few knowingly-corny groan-inducing puns.
Were this not enough every story concludes with a page or two of insightful tips on how to deal with cats that exhibit the same behaviours or conditions as those discussed in the previous tale. These could have been collected into a separate guide book and should prove indispensable to anyone who shares their home with a cat, especially if that cat is one of the more wilful varieties – so, in effect, this is two books, one funny, one serious, for the price of one.
This is essential reading for cat lovers, and a highly amusing, often enlightening read for anyone else.
I work with cats myself and know how challenging they can be but I'm not a groomer so found the stories very interesting, I love how Anita works holistically and is totally in tune with her feline clients. It was also lovely to see photos of the cats included in the book. My only criticism of the book would be that it wasn't long enough and so I look forward to a sequel maybe? I would also love to read about Anita's career as a feline behaviourist....
Through the expert eyes and the wonderful, warm humour of the high profile cat groomer and behaviourist, Anita Kelsey, we are given a privileged peek into the wonderful and sometimes surreal world of London puddy tats and their often quite eccentric owners!
It's written in a series of short, highly readable stories which can be dipped into whenever we need a moment to escape our own busy, stressful lives and join Anita's delightfully bonkers world for twenty minutes or so, emerging refreshed, chuckling to ourselves and ready to tackle life again.
She writes lovingly and with great affection for the cats and their humans and takes us through some of her most entertaining visits with some very strong characters of both species!
I don't want to give away too much, but you can expect to meet some divas (feline AND human!) and some super clever cats who have come up with some laugh-out-loud ways to avoid being groomed.
We meet 'Eddy the Psychotherapuss', an amazing cat who has the strange ability to induce calm and stillness in upset humans.
We meet the aptly named 'Lucky' who survived three days in the tunnels of the London Underground living on his wits and wild mice alone.
We meet 'Star' who was so naughty that he was awarded one of Anita's famous 'ASBO' certificates, which no doubt has pride of place on the mantel piece of his proud human 'parents' now.
The many others include 'Fisticuffs Frank', Denzel the Copycat' and 'Harry, the Four Pawed Assasin' but I'm not giving anything away, you'll have to find out for yourselves how they came to have such colourful names!
I think the book is also unique in that each story comes with a 'mog tip' attached. A serious insight into the issues faced by the cats and their owners in the stories. Anita includes links to further information, very useful starting points for coming up with your own solutions should you recognise any of the problems in the book.
Is it a series of anecdotes or a gentle guidance for cat owners? Is it about the cats or the humans? Is it funny or serious?
It is hilariously and poignantly all of those things rolled into one. I've bought six to give as Christmas presents to catty friends, so it's also about the most ideal mass solution to the headache of Christmas shopping known to humanity! One click on Amazon and you've got a load done without even leaving the house to brave the shops.
It's a very special book indeed. Highly recommended.
Have picked up a few tips and idea's that will help both my cat's and I having a more enjoyable grooming session, although I will be leaving claw trimming to the vet.
Have already been recommending this book to many of my cat friends and will continue to do so
Good buy for any cat lover. Makes a good present
