Review

Watch out for this new kid on children's books block, you will be won over! (Librarymice.com)

I loved everything about this book. (Bookbag)

A treat for new readers. (Peters Gazette)

The author is a comparitive newcomer to children's books; on this evidence, he should go far. (Independent on Sunday)

Claude's gentle adventures and Alex T. Smith's irresistible illustrations make this a great book to share with children. (ABC Magazine)

Comic talent not just for writing a good story but also illustrating it in a fitting but hilarious style. (Books For Keeps)

Funny, detailed illustrations. (Mumsense)

colourful and lively illustrations which add immensely to the fun. (Carousel)

Another great talent... a sparing style is the perfect medium for his humorous tale. (Junior)

Readers will be excitedly turning the pages. (Red House Children's Book Award)

Charming and gentle stories, these are a refreshing change from some of the formulaic series around. These are great books for reluctant readers - the stories are amusing, there is plenty happening, passages are short and the pictures are attractive and informative. (parentsintouch.co.uk)

I liked all the pictures, there are lots of them and they are colourful and funny. I would give this book ten out of ten. I am reading some of the other Claude books now too.
Lloyd 8, Wells Bookworms

(Wells Journal)

If you're feeling faint, you may have 'eleven-o'clock-itis'. What you need: ' a nice cup of tea & a sit down' p84 'Claude in the City'. I LOVE this book. I first 'found' @Alex_T_Smith on twitter, laughed at his tweets and followed the links to his blog where I was blown away by his brilliant, funny, warm illustrations. I was really looking forward to 'Claude in the City' and wasn't disappointed.

This is a gorgeous book. It was a huge hit with my children, aged 11, 12 and nearly 15, because of the wit of the illustrations and the cheeky jokes (Dr. Achinbum and the picture of the statue of a bottom come to mind), yet it is sweet and gentle enough to be read to little ones. The delightful partnership of a small, plump dog wearing a beret and his best friend, Sir Bobblysock (grubby and smelling a bit like cheese) gives us a book full of humour and wit - look out for the funny details in the background illustrations and gentle authorial jokes throughout the text. I am nearly 46, and have never before identified with a sock, but when, in the midst of a daring robbery by a delightfully buxom and cheerful lady Art thief, Sir Bobblysock felt 'sick with worry', I knew exactly what he was experiencing! Luckily for the sensitive reader, Claude saves the day, and he and Sir Bobblysock are carried home in triumph by the wonderful lady wrestlers, creations who, with the tatooed man embroidering in the doctor's surgery, or the lady and poodle both covered in pink spots, epitomise Alex T Smith's wonderfully original characters! Recommended for ALL AGES!

Claude lives with Mr and Mrs Shinyshoes and his best friend, Sir Bobbysock. When Mr and Mrs Shinyshoes go to work, he has lots of adventures. In this book he takes a trip to the City and has adventures at the Art Gallery and the hospital. The Claude books are excellent for children just moving towards reading chapter books - they have great illustrations, not too much print on each page, fast moving storylines and will appeal to both boys and girls. There is also a lot of humour, which makes them fun for any adult reading aloud. These are excellent reads and some of the best early chapter books I have come across.

Hooray!! I have finally found a book which appeals to my 7 year old son. He is a reasonably competent reader, but getting him to actually read a book has always been a struggle. I bought this along with a selection of other books and he picked it out saying it 'looked good'. We started reading it at bedtime and he didn't want to stop. He carried on reading after I had gone down stairs and then finished the entire 94 pages off at the breakfast table the next morning! It suited his ability perfectly with some tricky words but he was able to read the majority unaided, thus boosting his confidence and allowing him to properly follow the story. The quirkiness of the story and the characters appealed to him (and me) and the illustrations were fun to study.

We can't wait for the next Claude book to come out in the summer and have pre-ordered it. In the meantime I suspect that Claude in the City will be read over and over again. Well done and thank you Alex T Smith!

And this is the one that started it all off! In this title, we meet the eponymous Claude, and his sidekick, Sir Bobblysock, and begin the first of several adventures. After starting off in this wonderful title, we have been propelled through the successive stories, until we are champing at the bit for the October release of 'Claude on the Slopes.' Thank you Alex T. Smith for your wonderful creation.

My son is 5 & in reception. He can read really well when he chooses, but usually can't be bothered (why read when someone else can do it for you?). So, I'm trying to entice him to read by getting some more exciting books.

Last night I got out Claude in the City - I was a bit hesitant I'll admit, I'd seen it recommended, but had had a quick flick through when it arrived and wasn't sure it would really grab him (art galleries & berets? Really?).

I needn't have worried, as straight away he thought 'Sir Bobblysock' was a hilarious name and it was no problem getting him to read alternate pages as he really wanted to know what happened & he insisted on reading the whole book. The stories are very funny in an age-appropriate way and exciting (catching a burglar, going to hospital) and split into 2 chapters (Part 1 & 2). There's a bit of suspense as to what will happen too.

This morning my son was later than usual getting up, when he did come downstairs he happily told me 'I've been reading Claude'. 'Really?' Then he said 'Oh yes, I read the whole book first, then I re-read the bit where he pretends to be an ambulance!' Yes, Yes Yes! He's reading because he wants to! Thank you very much Alex T Smith, we'll be buying more of your books. :)

Claude is a lovely story that my kids have asked for again and again. It's an original story - I mean - a sock - going to hospital! But it's so believable! They are begging me to buy the whole series now!
