Charming and gentle stories, these are a refreshing change from some of the formulaic series around. These are great books for reluctant readers - the stories are amusing, there is plenty happening, passages are short and the pictures are attractive and informative. (parentsintouch.co.uk)
I liked all the pictures, there are lots of them and they are colourful and funny. I would give this book ten out of ten. I am reading some of the other Claude books now too.

This is a gorgeous book. It was a huge hit with my children, aged 11, 12 and nearly 15, because of the wit of the illustrations and the cheeky jokes (Dr. Achinbum and the picture of the statue of a bottom come to mind), yet it is sweet and gentle enough to be read to little ones. The delightful partnership of a small, plump dog wearing a beret and his best friend, Sir Bobblysock (grubby and smelling a bit like cheese) gives us a book full of humour and wit - look out for the funny details in the background illustrations and gentle authorial jokes throughout the text. I am nearly 46, and have never before identified with a sock, but when, in the midst of a daring robbery by a delightfully buxom and cheerful lady Art thief, Sir Bobblysock felt 'sick with worry', I knew exactly what he was experiencing! Luckily for the sensitive reader, Claude saves the day, and he and Sir Bobblysock are carried home in triumph by the wonderful lady wrestlers, creations who, with the tatooed man embroidering in the doctor's surgery, or the lady and poodle both covered in pink spots, epitomise Alex T Smith's wonderfully original characters! Recommended for ALL AGES!
We can't wait for the next Claude book to come out in the summer and have pre-ordered it. In the meantime I suspect that Claude in the City will be read over and over again. Well done and thank you Alex T Smith!
Last night I got out Claude in the City - I was a bit hesitant I'll admit, I'd seen it recommended, but had had a quick flick through when it arrived and wasn't sure it would really grab him (art galleries & berets? Really?).
I needn't have worried, as straight away he thought 'Sir Bobblysock' was a hilarious name and it was no problem getting him to read alternate pages as he really wanted to know what happened & he insisted on reading the whole book. The stories are very funny in an age-appropriate way and exciting (catching a burglar, going to hospital) and split into 2 chapters (Part 1 & 2). There's a bit of suspense as to what will happen too.
This morning my son was later than usual getting up, when he did come downstairs he happily told me 'I've been reading Claude'. 'Really?' Then he said 'Oh yes, I read the whole book first, then I re-read the bit where he pretends to be an ambulance!' Yes, Yes Yes! He's reading because he wants to! Thank you very much Alex T Smith, we'll be buying more of your books. :)
