Product Description

Product Description

Released at the tail end of 1996, Tommy Emmanuel's grandiose project with the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra could almost be dubbed a greatest hits collection. However, Classical Gas isn't about hits, it is about songs that sound exceptional with the augmentation of an orchestra. Tommy chose to debut a few new songs on this record, as well as including the tripped-out Gollywogs Cake Walk.

Orchestral support did nothing to enhance Tommy Emanuel's performance but instead it disguised this man's virtuoso talent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too young Tommy 4 Sept. 2011
By marythekat - Published on Amazon.com

This disc is from the era when orchestration was used instead of just listening to acoustic guitar music. (Remember Mason Williams' classical gas with the orchestration? Same here.) For true Tommy Emmanuel fans, I would not buy this CD. The CD itself arrived in perfect condition, however, and arrived quickly after ordering. So the product was great, the contents disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 22 Oct. 2008
By Paul Keller - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Overall this is a great album showcasing Tommy in a bit more subdued fashion. The execution and arrangement of "Padre" is alone worth the price of admission. "The Hunt" is really solid and anthemic. "Initiation" is really well produced and majorly powerful. He does a fantastic arrangement of "Gollywog's Cakewalk". While no one on this earth can play Concerto de Aranjuez like John Williams, my skin grows bumps while listening to Tommy play this. The album also comes in a pairing with the Journey for a pretty reasonable price.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Great Disapointment 25 Aug. 2005
By foal - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
There is too much Australian Philharmonic and too little Tommy Emmanuel. The recording sounds like the microphone was hidden in someone's pocket. It has little dynamic range and the sounds are muffled. I have a track of Tommy playing Classical Gas which I recorded off of FM radio which is far superior in performance and sound than the track on this album.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just say "No". 10 April 2015

Tommy Emmanuel's Classical Gas is one of my favorite songs and I bought this hoping that it would be similar to the one I hear on Pandora all the time. Not hardly. Try pretentiously orcheasmic.
I wasted $9.95 and was reminded why I don't buy music anymore.
